This week's batch of games take its inspiration from real life, but twists your expectations in weird and wonderful ways. Consider it an alchemical transformation that results in gaming gold.

We're no history buffs, but we're fairly certain that World War I did not involve ferocious velociraptors stalking hapless soldiers through the trenches. (But who knows? Maybe we were absent the day it was covered in history class.) The creators of '1916 - The War You Never Knew' -- a first-person survival horror experience set in the dingy trenches of the Great War -- clearly took inspiration from indie sensation 'Amnesia: The Dark Descent.' Setting this type of game in this type of environment is brilliant; it allows for a claustrophobic world that doesn't feel artificially constrained, and makes for a genuinely scary experience, notwithstanding the addition of deadly dinosaurs.
This week we're showing love to the latest games from some of our favorite designers. These are creators from whom we've come to expect the best -- and this week's picks certainly live up to our expectations.

Self-professed "dot matrix dominatrix" Anna Anthropy (a.k.a. Auntie Pixelante) has consistently wowed us in the past. Her latest game is the intriguingly titled 'Lesbian Spider-Queens of Mars.' Modeled after the classic arcade game 'Wizard of Wor,' it perfectly recreates the feel of a greasy, soda-stained arcade cabinet. Simplistic yet addictive, 'Lesbian Spider-Queens of Mars' is a brilliant example of retro gaming done right.

If you've played either of Amanita Design's previous works -- the 'Samorost' series or 'Machinarium' -- you know to expect a visually thrilling spectacle. Amanita's latest game, 'Osada,' leans more towards the surreal insanity of their 'Samorost' games than the more puzzle-oriented 'Machinarium,' with a stream-of-consciousness flow of nonsensical visuals and simple point-and-click puzzles. Oozing with irreverence and insanity, 'Osada' is an invigorating time-waster that's sure to delight anyone with a taste for the strange.
This week we're showing love to the latest games from some of our favorite designers. These are creators that we've come to expect the best from - and this week's picks certainly live up our expectations.

Designer Locomalito can always be trusted to deliver the goods when it comes to games that are as retro as they are forward-thinking. His latest, 'Viriax,' is a great example of this, mixing a simple, old-school feel with a few game play twists that make the experience far more than an exercise in nostalgic reverence. Most importantly, your method of attack requires getting ahead of your foes and attacking downward. That's already mind-bending enough in a vertical scrolling game like 'Viriax,' but add in the randomly generated levels and a glorious assortment of power-ups, and you've got a fresh game that's easy to get into. Locomalito has once again proven why he's one of the best indie developers working today.
This week we're showing love to the latest games from some of our favorite designers. These are creators that we've come to expect the best from - and this week's picks certainly live up our expectations, leaving us fiending for what's next.

Anyone who's played designer Konjak's previous works -- particularly 'Legend of Princess' -- knows the level of artistry he attains with pixels. His latest unfinished game 'Iconoclasts' is further proof of his skills. Incredible to behold, with whimsical character acting, fluid animation and lushly designed levels, 'Iconoclasts' feels like the creation of some alternate dimension in which pixelated art never went away.

What's going on under the hood is just as impressive. The game features perfectly executed side scrolling gameplay that feels straight out of 'Metroid' and 'Mega Man.' That's why it hurts so much to hear that Konjak may be abandoning the project. But you can help him finish: Download the game for your PC and, if you like it, you can donate to Konjak directly through his website, and support his continued game development.

Your writer likes to think of designer Cactus Squid as the David Lynch of gaming. As equally disturbing as they are compelling, Cactus Squid's games are always something we look forward to with feverish anticipation. His latest, 'Full Throttle,' is a nightmarish racing game involving men who turn into cars, competing in order to win money for their man-to-car reassignment surgery... and that's just the tip of the insanity iceberg. While the racing is serviceable, the game more than makes up for its simplistic gameplay with an experience that feels like a combination of the ludicrous 'Cho Aniki' (slightly NSFW) series and classic racing game 'R.C. Pro-Am.' And that's a level of madness we can fully support.
Spring's barely arrived, yet we're already looking ahead to summer and the prospect of lounging on the beach with a trashy paperback in hand. In the meantime, we've picked a few of our favorite nautically themed games to satisfy our longing for the sea.

While it may not be the most accurate portrayal of oceanic treasure hunting, 'Deep Sea Diver' is certainly plenty of fun. Don't let its bright, colorful looks fool you, though. Death still awaits those who linger too long beneath the surface, exploring the darkened labyrinths for relics and cash. Thankfully, your submersible is upgradeable, allowing nautical adventurers to take ever more daring risks. Jacques Cousteau would be proud.
Spring's barely arrived, yet we're already looking ahead to summer and the prospect of lounging on the beach with a trashy paperback in hand. In the meantime, we've picked a few of our favorite nautically themed games to satisfy our longing for the sea.

It's tough being the protagonist of 'Submerged - LaSol,' janitor Stan Winston. (Nice one, guys.) Sure, he gets to work on the man-made, oceanic resort of LaSol, but he also has to contend with the bombing and subsequent sinking of said resort. It's the kind of trade-off that makes one reconsider whether or not that 401k plan is really worth it. Trapped in a small maintenance shaft, you must scramble to freedom before the steadily rising water level catches up with you. The game's strong suit is a level of tension that's not often found in adventure games. Add some solid voice acting and well-animated character animation, and this PC download should become another fantastic (and free) addition to any gamer's library.
Spring's barely arrived, yet we're already looking ahead to summer and the prospect of lounging on the beach with a trashy paperback in hand. In the meantime, we've picked a few of our favorite nautically themed games to satisfy our longing for the sea.

'Beacon' is a brief adventure game with one of the most original and eerie settings we've had the pleasure to explore. A Russian space capsule crashes into the bottom of the ocean, and you -- taking on the role of a repair droid -- must find a way to release an emergency beacon before the spacecraft is crushed by undersea pressure. While this PC download only features a handful of environments, each is rendered with an artistic touch. We only wish this tale could have lasted longer. If only an entire space station had crashed instead...
Spring's barely arrived, yet we're already looking ahead to summer and the prospect of lounging on the beach with a trashy paperback in hand. In the meantime, we've picked a few of our favorite nautically themed games to satisfy our longing for the sea.

'Fishbane' recounts the adventures of our titular hero, who must use an endless supply of harpoons to persevere through a series of puzzling platform challenges. Mastering the harpoon is the key to success, as you can use it to climb ledges, shoot it to trigger switches, and even ride it like a deadly surfboard. Unlike the majority of platform puzzlers out there, 'Fishbane' will actually test your mental mettle, requiring actual brain power to circumvent some of its trickier challenges.
Spring's barely arrived, yet we're already looking ahead to summer and the prospect of lounging on the beach with a trashy paperback in hand. In the meantime, we've picked a few of our favorite nautically themed games to satisfy our longing for the sea.

'Beneath the Waves' is a seafaring adventure that takes you to the bottom of the ocean floor and back again in search of eight stone idols. Thankfully you have the lung capacity of a humpback whale, since you must dive deep into the depths to recover these idols, all the while avoiding a legion of sea beasties, from sharks to jellyfish. Each idol must then be placed upon a pedestal on the surface, which requires some daring platforming. It's a nice mix of two disparate game-play styles (with an emphasis on finesse and planning over mindless action) that we can definitely appreciate.
We've been feeling homesick, with nothing but these games to soothe our longing. Our picks this week will leave you yearning for a mom-cooked meal, or joyously reliving the day you left the nest.

Thank God our daily commute has never, ever been as rough as the one portrayed in 'The Journey Home.' If it were, we'd never leave home in the first place. (Not that we really do anyway. Ah, the joys of freelancing!) This monochrome platformer will remind any old-school gamer of the frustrating NES classics from days gone by. Screens full of projectiles, enemies with random movement patterns, and a sticky jumping mechanic will inspire harrowing flashbacks of 'Contra' and 'Ninja Gaiden.' It's a delightful reminder of "Nintendo Hard" difficulty that will leave newer gamers with severe PTSD, and give hardened veterans a great reason to launch into a long-winded diatribe about how easy the kids have it today.
We've been feeling homesick, with nothing but these games to soothe our longing. Our picks this week will leave you yearning for a mom-cooked meal, or joyously reliving the day you left the nest.

'Get Home' is an ingenious bit of marketing, made in conjunction with the song 'Weathervanes and Chemicals' by the band 'Team Me.' While the game fits the song's lyrics more aptly than its indie pop tone, it's still a fairly successful attempt at merging music and gaming. Its platforming is serviceable (although marred by a poorly scrolling camera), but the game is most successful in its anti-drug message. It's rare to find a game that delivers a "message" without coming across as heavy-handed or yawn-inducing, but 'Get Home' does so quite well, feeling less like an after school special and more like an honest portrayal of drug abuse.
We've been feeling homesick, with nothing but these games to soothe our longing. Our picks this week will leave you yearning for a mom-cooked meal, or joyously reliving the day you left the nest.

While its title may be unpronounceable, 'N?na, Ha?e F?aith' combines its protagonist's world-shifting abilities with nigh incomprehensible language to create an appropriately alien setting for a story about returning home. By closing her eyes, N?na can shift between a light world and a dark one, each of which will grant her unique powers and allow her to circumvent the many obstacles in her way, from skeletal fiends to unreachable keys. It's a solidly constructed, cute and surreal platformer that's worth playing through, if only to make sure N?na gets home safely.

'Dacey in the Dark - Prelude' is a short, melancholy adventure game for PC about growing up and leaving home, with a few fantastical elements thrown into the mix. A dark, purple-hued atmosphere colors the game world, giving it an otherworldly quality that meshes well with its (perhaps overtly) melodramatic premise. While the keyboard-driven UI takes a little while to get used to, the sadly abrupt ending leaves you wishing the story continued.
While it may not be much of a challenge, the adorable 'Fallen From The Moon' is kind of like the gaming equivalent of a lazy Sunday spent lounging in a hammock. As you help a blocky moon man return to his lunar home, you'll be absorbed in the whimsical graphics and stress-free gameplay. A perfect diversion if you're looking for a change of pace from more intensive gaming fare, 'Fallen' is about as relaxing as you can get.
Some say that the only certainties in the world are death and taxes, but if anyone's made a compelling game about the latter, well, we want to play it. Death, on the other hand, is everywhere in games. This week, we'll take a look at a few games about The End, from the poignant to the hilarious. And no zombie games, we promise.

'BeGone,' a Unity-powered first person shooter, provides deathmatch action for up to 12 players at a time, making it perfect for quick bouts of machine-gun-assisted anger management. While it won't put any console FPS to shame, it does look fantastic (although your mileage may vary when it comes to performance). We had to turn down the graphics resolution to get a non-choppy experience, and even then we still had trouble getting any headshots. Oh, and a word to the wise: Don't even think about playing it without a mouse, unless you enjoy the shame of being sniped 20 seconds into a round.

'L'Abbaye des Morts' is a creepy platformer that uses both 13th century history and retro graphics to

playfully explore a decidedly grim period in history. You play a Cathar monk who, in an attempt to escape persecution, ventures into a mysterious church to evade his pursuers. Of course, the church hides deadly secrets, which can be unraveled by uncovering scrolls. As you descend into the hidden recesses beneath the church, you'll have to contend with a horde of diabolical enemies, using only your wits and evasive skills. (Catharism was a non-violent religion.) As with anything designer Locomalito touches, 'L'Abbaye des Morts' is both lovingly retro and flawlessly executed, right down to its fake box art.

'L'Abbaye des Morts' is a free PC download.

We've come to expect impressive things from Adult Swim's roster of games, and 'House of Dead Ninjas' is no exception. It delivers the goods with an addictive blend of speedy platforming and pixelated ninja combat. The game is all about breakneck side-scrolling action, as you descend deeper and deeper into the titular house (of dead ninjas), using a variety of deadly ninja weaponry to dispatch the foes that cross your path. For fans of classic Asian action cinema (and grotesquely profuse arterial spray), 'House of Dead Ninjas' is your game.
Some say that the only certainties in the world are death and taxes, but if anyone's made a compelling game about the latter, well, we want to play it.
'Technobabylon Part II' is a robust improvement on its predecessor. Besides asking you to talk people out of killing themselves, the game is an entertaining exercise in world-building and puzzle-solving. In stark contrast to the first game's single-room environment, 'Technobabylon Part II' takes you from the scene of an attempted suicide to a crime scene investigation, with stops for blackmail and terrorism in between. It's remarkably fleshed out, and while sometimes the overload of information and back story can leave you bewildered, you'll be even more impressed by how much care went into the experience. If you're jonesing for an adventure gaming fix (with surprisingly logical puzzles) or just want to explore a tantalizing sci-fi world, we highly recommend downloading it for your PC.
'The End of Us' tells a sentimental story of friendship and love between two meteors, as well as the heartwarming annihilation of the Earth. While it's less a game and more an interactive narrative, 'The End of Us' does convey the inevitable sadness of long-term relationships, even if the destruction of our beloved home-world is somewhat of an afterthought.

So Close, Yet So Far: Puzzle Platformer 'Duplicator'

This week, we're offering up a bevy of puzzlers that promise to leave you scratching your head. From 2-D platformer puzzlers to 3-D variations on 'Jenga,' these games will test the limits of your brain power. Make sure you've got your thinking cap on.

From 'Coma' to 'suteF,' there's no lack of fantastic puzzle platformers out there. 'Duplicator' follows in the footsteps of those games, and while it's certainly no dud, its reach does somewhat exceed its grasp. While visually pleasing (if a little bit on the "generic art game" tip), the game falters somewhat with its needlessly convoluted control scheme. With a variety of different systems at play, from creating duplicate bodies, to maneuvering crates, to managing resources, simplicity is key, especially when these systems are integrated into a Flash game and 'Duplicator's' controls are far better suited to a slower paced game. It's a bit of a shame, as the game does include some truly head-scratching scenarios that require real thought. Without a doubt, there's a great game lurking beneath an unpolished exterior.
This week, we're offering up a bevy of puzzlers that promise to leave you scratching your head. From 2-D platformer puzzlers to 3-D variations on 'Jenga,' these games will test the limits of your brain power. Make sure you've got your thinking cap on.

'Give Up Robot 2' does everything a great sequel should, adding inventive new variations to its predecessor's already rock-solid, 'Bionic Commando'-style platforming. You'll grapple rockets to adjust their course, use your weight to drag down platforms and switches, and collect hard-to-reach coins that provide incentive for risky jumps and swings. The sequel feels smoother and faster, with a bright, cartoony new look that reminds us of 'Super Mario Bros.' We don't often see sequels to browser games, but we'll welcome any that are as well done as this.
This week, we're offering up a bevy of puzzlers that promise to leave you scratching your head. From 2-D platformer puzzlers to 3-D variations on 'Jenga,' these games will test the limits of your brain power. Make sure you've got your thinking cap on.

'Interlocked' is 3-D puzzler that reminds us of both 'Jenga' and 'Picross 3D. Like those games, it's both simple and hopelessly addictive. Your goal is to dissasemble an agglomeration of cubes, which you manipulate in three dimensional space with your mouse. You can rotate the assemblage to get a better view of how blocks fit together, and push and pull cubes in whichever direction you like in order to break them apart. It's incredibly appealing, and far more satisfying than all the times we've torn a Rubik's Cube to pieces in a fit of frustrated rage.

At its core, 'Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles' is a fun, tile-based puzzler, but it's the extra layers that surround that core that truly make the game appealing. Charming graphics, a lengthy story mode, level-specific challenges and more add up to a surprisingly deep game, especially for a free download. We recommend that any and all puzzle enthusiasts with a PC grab it immediately here.
As Method Man will readily tell you, cash rules everything around us. While we don't yet live in a world where breaking bricks with our heads yields precious gold coins, we can still indulge in rampant greed in the gaming world. This week we'll be looking at games that revolve around dollar bills, gold medallions and all manner of monetary excitement.

'Mastermind: World Conqueror' puts you in the diabolical shoes of an evil super-villain who's hell-bent on conquering the world. It's a fun twist on the real-time strategy genre, but one that doesn't ask you to save the day. In fact, you must do the opposite. You hire henchmen in order to rob banks and steal scientific research, open evil coffee shops to increase your revenue, build secret lairs across the world, and generally make life miserable for everyone but yourself. It's also got a surprisingly great sense of humor, with wise-cracking minions that make your evil schemes even more enjoyable to perpetrate.

'Bitejacker' adds a sizable amount of depth and style to what is essentially a run-and-gun zombie shooter. Each suitably dreary level holds a multitude of achievements and collectibles, from zombie kill streaks, survivors in need of rescue, and, most importantly, money. There's a great balance of risk-reward here, as you feverishly search through containers and corpses while the undead hordes inch closer. Cash will buy you new weapons and upgrades, which you'll desperately need to keep yourself and your friends safe. With its retro style and deep gameplay, we'll count 'Bitejacker' among the ever-growing legion of amazing zombie games.

If you want to succeed in business, you'll need to brave man-eating mice, overflowing toilets and homicidal mailmen. Well, at least according to 'Corporate Climber.' Rising through the ranks from lowly janitor to heartless CEO involves quick reflexes and tricky platforming; you'll need to avoid a host of deranged obstacles while ascending the floors of a deadly office building. It's another excellent addition to Adult Swim's already impressive stable of off-kilter games.
Following (closely) in the footsteps of adventure game classics like 'The Secret of Monkey Island' comes 'The Journey Down: Over the Edge'. 'Over the Edge' is the first of a four-part adventure starring Bwana, a down on his luck gas station attendant who is, of course, about to get wrapped up in events far greater than he can imagine. It's an auspicious beginning to what looks to be one of the most charming indie game experiences this year. Sporting beautifully hand-drawn backgrounds and a soundtrack that evokes fond memories of the 'Monkey Island' series, this highly polished piece of nostalgia weaves a remarkably lush world worth getting lost in. If you're able to stomach some rather broadly drawn racial stereotypes (never has "mon" been so overused), then you can download it for PC right now.

'American Dream' is a simulation that combines stock trading and interior decoration. By day, you'll buy and trade '80s celebrities, from Mr. T to Michael Jackson, like stocks. Make enough money on the market and you'll be able to deck out your pad with the finest in home furnishings, from a Commodore 64 to a porcelain tub. Get your home looking swanky enough and you'll start getting invited to debaucherous (and slightly NSFW) parties where you can pick up choice stock tips. The game is drenched in a sleazy '80s vibe that would make even Gordan Gekko cringe; just buy low and sell high, and you'll make your first million in no time.
For gamers, getting lost isn't something to fear, as the thrill of discovering and escaping from unknown lands is integral to some of our most cherished gaming experiences. ('Myst,' anyone?) This week, we'll lose ourselves in five games that delve fearlessly into the unfamiliar.

'Looming' is a puzzle game at heart. Its narrative slowly unravels as you explore a vast landscape. The game's world feels far larger than its simplistic graphics inititally portray, hiding a multitude of structures and items that must be discovered in order to fill in the game's backstory. Through the use of sparse visuals and ambient noise, 'Looming' is able to evoke a disturbingly eerie world. The game's approach to design is a perfect example of how true the old adage "less is more" really is.
For gamers, getting lost isn't something to fear, as the thrill of discovering and escaping from unknown lands is integral to some of our most cherished gaming experiences. ('Myst,' anyone?) This week, we'll lose ourselves in five games that delve fearlessly into the unfamiliar.

'Pathos' is hard to pin down. It could be a methodically paced, metatextual exploration of how powerless gaming avatars (and players) really are. Or, maybe it's an unsettling, sadistic journey that provides an unexpected role reversal for the player. Or perhaps it's just another attempt at making "art" out of games by throwing together seemingly "mature" elements with rudimentary gameplay. We think it's a mix of all of the above, equally irritating and enlightening, and unusual enough to warrant playing.
For gamers, getting lost isn't something to fear, as the thrill of discovering and escaping from unknown lands is integral to some of our most cherished gaming experiences. ('Myst,' anyone?) This week, we'll lose ourselves in five games that delve fearlessly into the unfamiliar.

'Stream' is possibly the world's first four-dimensional platformer, utilizing time as a key component in addition to its more traditional 3-D action. The game takes place in a world rendered in hazy charcoal, filled with various rooms that possess a variety of platforming challenges. But these platforms aren't your standard immobile blocks. In 'Stream', almost every level's components are constantly moving, and must be tamed using your ability to pause, fast forward, and reverse time. 'Stream' requires the Unity Web Player, and is playable now on Kongregate.
For gamers, getting lost isn't something to fear, as the thrill of discovering and escaping from unknown lands is integral to some of our most cherished gaming experiences. ('Myst,' anyone?) This week, we'll lose ourselves in five games that delve fearlessly into the unfamiliar.

Rock-solid platformer 'Beacon' is perfect for speed running, and manages to capture both the excitement and melancholy of being lost. Taking the role of an astronaut stranded far from home, you must explore the dangerous world around you in order to find some way to escape. The game evokes a strong sense of wonder through its 8-bit landscape as it urges you to progress further into the mysterious labyrinth that lies beneath the planet's surface. Even if making sense of the minimal plot is of no interest to you, the smooth, jetpack-assisted platforming is more than fun enough to make this 15-minute jaunt worth your time.

'Balloon Diaspora,' a point-and-click adventure through a mysterious land, was created by the same fine folks behind 'A House In California.' After your hot-air balloon crashes in an unknown place, you team up with a friendly being named Silas in order to get yourself airborne again. Along the way, you interact with a multitude of interesting characters who give you glimpses into a world whose customs and traditions are fleshed out in fascinating detail. Combining a somberly rendered world with an understated, Brian Eno-esque soundtrack, 'Balloon Diaspora' is remarkably constructed. It's a pity that we can't stay longer.
This week's roundup of time wasters will attest to how far browser-based gaming has graphically come. New platforms, such as the Unity Web Player, have given designers the ability to add the third dimension to browser games with truly astounding results. So, sit back and prepare yourself for astonishment, as this week is all about delicious eye-candy-filled gaming goodness.

'Antimatiere' is a relentlessly inventive adventure game that marries a unique visual style to clever puzzles. The game involves grabbing the textures from walls, floors and ceilings, and manipulating them in order to solve a variety of challenges. These puzzles are tightly tied to the game's surreal environments, which range from infinitely looping halls to tropical jungles, all rendered in a sharply angular style. Despite their seemingly primitive graphics, each level is incredibly evocative. It's rare that we come across a game that so excellently meshes its visual style with its gameplay, so download the Unity Web Player and check it out ASAP.

'Island Survival' is a time waster with a chillingly scary premise. You must survive a race against time while atop a quickly melting block of ice. Collecting snowflakes will restore the ground beneath you, but you'll have to leap across swiftly dissolving ice platforms in order to collect them. Trying to nimbly collect snowflakes while the world shifts around you is nerve-wracking enough, but the eerie score adds another level of unease to the proceedings.

The aptly titled 'Feign' is utterly devoted to messing with your perceptions. Your goal is to find nine bodies, each hidden within a surreal maze whose boundaries and barriers shift in astounding ways. The game's color scheme consists of two tones, which create an indistinct architecture and lead to some smoothly disorienting shifts in your surroundings. Finding your way through this labyrinth may not be a cakewalk, but it's certainly easier than finding the bodies hidden within it. If you find yourself at an impasse, try to remember that this is a game where nothing is as it seems, including your task.

'Save Toshi' is a breezy, fun little physics puzzler with delightful graphics. Each level asks you to manipulate the environment by throwing tennis balls in order to maneuver the titular Toshi onto a dance floor. Even with its strange environmental materials, such as jelly and ice, this game will feel familiar to anyone who's played a physics puzzler. While the game's challenges may never reach a level of nail-biting difficulty, 'Save Toshi' is still a pleasant experience that stands out from the crowd of me-too physics puzzlers, thanks to its relaxing pace and sumptuous visuals. Just make sure you press 'T' to mute Toshi, as she may be the most annoyingly voiced video game character that we've ever encountered.
While our dreams of competing in life-or-death lightcycle races may possibly be out of reach, we can still thank the fine folks at Ayogo for bringing us closer to that reality than we've ever come before. While there are a number of lightcycle games (both official and unofficial games inspired by the neon vehicles from 'Tron'), 'Lightspeeder' definitely takes top honors. The goal is simple: to outmaneuver and defeat your opponents by causing them to crash into your cycle's light trail. Simple, yes, but easy to pull off? Not exactly. 'Lightspeeder' demands quick reflexes (especially on its faster speed settings) and a little bit of luck.
