Facebook is reportedly working with China's largest search engine to create a new, jointly owned social network. The collaboration with Baidu would allow Facebook to get a foothold in the Chinese market while giving Baidu the chance to capitalize on Mark Zuckerberg's network-building expertise. The new site would still need to be approved by Chinese's Internet regulators, who retain final say on pretty much everything. And it definitely wouldn't be able to use the Facebook.com URL, which remains blocked throughout the mainland.
Facebook Strikes Deal to Create New Social Network in China originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 14:50:00 EST. Jonathan Franzen has a new piece in The New Yorker, but you'll have to become a fan of the magazine on Facebook if you want to read the whole thing. Taking its cue from the likes of Lil Wayne and Jennifer Lopez, The New Yorker has published Franzen's piece exclusively on its Facebook page in an effort to engage readers on the social network. The essay covers Franzen's trip to the island of Alejandro Selkirk, where he went to mourn the death of his friend, writer David Foster Wallace.
Jonathan Franzen's New Yorker Piece Hides Behind a Facebook Like Wall originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 13:10:00 EST. And if you dare say otherwise, you'll probably get sued.

That was essentially the message that Assange conveyed over the weekend, during his first public appearance since being arrested in December, amid accusations of rape and sexual assault. Speaking to an audience at a public debate in London, Assange claimed that his whistleblowing organization is more accountable than most democratically elected governments -- simply because WikiLeaks relies upon personal donations, rather than corporate money.
Continue reading Julian Assange Says WikiLeaks Is More Accountable Than Most Governments, Gets a Little Sassy About It

Julian Assange Says WikiLeaks Is More Accountable Than Most Governments, Gets a Little Sassy About It originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 10:20:00 EST. The Kremlin was reportedly considering blocking both services, along with Hotmail, in response to a major cyberattack that crippled the country's most popular blog and an independent news site. Some within the Kremlin had believed the services posed a major threat to national security, but some critics had thought the government may have just been looking for an excuse to tighten its control over the Web -- ahead of December's parliamentary elections and next year's presidential race.
Russia Won't Ban Gmail or Skype Amid Security Concerns originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 09:25:00 EST. A group of grad students has come up with a way to instantly diagnose malaria, using only a smartphone and some fancy software.

The team, comprised of students from around the nation, developed the prototype using a Samsung Focus smartphone, running Windows 7. After adding a microscopic camera lens to the phone, the students developed software capable of analyzing and scanning blood for malaria parasites. With the app installed on the phone, doctors or nurses could theoretically take a photo of any blood sample, and instantly know whether or not a patient is infected with malaria, and how severe the case may be.
Continue reading Students Create Smartphone App Capable of Detecting Malaria

Students Create Smartphone App Capable of Detecting Malaria originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 09 Apr 2011 09:00:00 EST.
Last year, 29-year-old Albert Gonzalez pleaded guilty to hacking into computer systems at TJX, Office Max, Dave & Busters, Heartland Payment Systems and other companies, in order to steal some 130 million credit card numbers. He received a 20-year prison sentence, which he's currently serving at a low-security facility in Michigan.
Continue reading Convicted Hacker Says He Committed Credit Card Heist for U.S. Government

Convicted Hacker Says He Committed Credit Card Heist for U.S. Government originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 13:35:00 EST. What's crazier than locking yourself in your house and threatening to kill anyone that crosses its threshold? Walking out of your house to shoot a robot with an AK-47. Naked. While being videotaped. A Florida man accomplished all of those feats, during a recent standoff with a camera-equipped SWAT team bot. The $65,000 robot bravely attempted to enter the man's house, where it was greeted with nudity and four bullets. The man was taken into custody, and is undergoing psychological evaluations.
Florida Man Guns Down SWAT Team Robot With an AK-47 -- Naked originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 11:40:00 EST.

GameStop opened a new store today on Facebook. The shop, accessible via GameStop's Facebook page, allows users to purchase games online, read product reviews, watch trailers and find nearby GameStop outlets. Fans of the retailer can also "like" and share specific games on Facebook, and earn points via GameStop's customer loyalty program.

Today's launch is just the latest in a series of recent moves from GameStop, which appears eager to expand its operations. Last year, the company bought social gaming site Kongregate, and, just a few days ago, it acquired game-streaming startup Spawn Labs. According to Technologizer, GameStop has even considered developing its own tablet, though details remain hazy.
GameStop Unveils New Facebook Store originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 14:20:00 EST.
The U.S. government is considering using Facebook and Twitter to issue terrorism warnings, as part of its revamped terror alert system.

According to a draft of a Homeland Security plan obtained by the AP, the government would broadcast the warnings via Facebook and Twitter "when appropriate," and only after federal, state and local officials have already been alerted. But these warnings won't be quite as complex as before. The new system features only two alert levels -- 'elevated' and 'imminent' -- rather than the five colors that comprised the previous scale.
Continue reading U.S. Might Use Facebook, Twitter to Broadcast Terrorism Alerts

U.S. Might Use Facebook, Twitter to Broadcast Terrorism Alerts originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:40:00 EST. Online shopping can be a pretty solitary endeavor, unless you're shopping at B Reel's 3Live Shop. On the 3Live Shop, shoppers are invited to start video calls with sales reps, who can guide them through their purchases, using touchscreens to drag different products into the frame. According to B Reel, it's a "simple and personal" approach to online shopping -- assuming you're not averse to human interaction.
Future of Online Customer Support Looks Like 'Minority Report' originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 11:25:00 EST.
Sources close to the matter told the Wall Street Journal that YouTube is planning to introduce new channels on the site, featuring both professionally produced, original content, as well as content that already exists on the platform. The channels will be highlighted on YouTube's homepage, and will be organized by category. The company is already holding discussions with Hollywood talent agencies about creating new channels, and may end up spending as much as $100 million on the overhaul.
Continue reading Google Adding 'Channels' to YouTube, Looking to Compete With TV

Google Adding 'Channels' to YouTube, Looking to Compete With TV originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 10:40:00 EST. Somewhere near the intersection of online dating and unabashed prostitution is where you can find WhatsYourPrice.com -- a new dating site where cash trumps compatibility.

Site founder Brandon Wade compares WhatsYourPrice.com to eBay. "When you see a hot single you want to date, just make an offer and buy the first date," Wade explains, in a press release. But that's where the similarities end.

WhatsYourPrice members are divided into two groups: "the generous" (i.e., men) and "the attractive" (women). Attractive users are invited to create profiles on the site, featuring all the basic information you'd find on most dating networks, as well as the amount of money they'd accept for someone to go on a date with them. The generous, meanwhile, can browse through these profiles, and make offers to any attractive users that catch their eye. Once an offer is made, the attractive member can choose to accept it, reject it, or come up with a different price.
Continue reading New Dating Site Blurs the Line Between Capitalism and Prostitution

New Dating Site Blurs the Line Between Capitalism and Prostitution originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 08:39:00 EST. After unveiling his 'Necker Nymph' submersible last year, Richard Branson is taking his underwater adventures to the next level, with 'Virgin Oceanic' -- an initiative to explore the deepest parts of the world's oceans.

Over the next two years, Branson hopes to penetrate the deepest points of the world's five oceans with a fleet of high-tech toys, including a one-manned submarine and a 125-foot catamaran, which will serve as the sub's mothership. Chris Welsh will pilot the first dive into the Mariana Trench, later this year, with Branson slated to take the helm during the sub's second mission, to the Puerto Rico Trench.
Six movie studios have filed a federal lawsuit against Zediva -- a movie rental start-up that allows users to watch films shortly after they're released on DVD, but before they become available on services like Netflix or Redbox.

According to Zediva's founder and chief executive, Venky Srinivasan, the company operates like any other brick-and-mortar DVD rental service. Users pay to rent individual DVDs, which they can watch on physical players. The only difference is that the DVD players aren't located in users' homes, but in Silicon Valley. Customers can remotely control the players to stream films to their homes, but their array of choices depends upon Zediva's DVD stocks. If the company has 10 DVDs of a certain film, only 10 people can watch it at a time.
Continue reading MPAA Files Lawsuit Against Movie Rental Start-Up

MPAA Files Lawsuit Against Movie Rental Start-Up originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 12:50:00 EST. Netflix has obtained the rights to stream 'Mad Men' reruns in the U.S. as part of a new deal with Lionsgate, the show's producer. The agreement allows Netflix to stream all seven seasons of the series, including the four that have already aired, and the three final seasons. That's 91 episodes in total, at a price of nearly $91 million. Unfortunately for everyone, this doesn't change the fact that 'Mad Men' won't be returning until 2012.
Netflix to Stream 'Mad Men' Reruns, Ease Our Withdrawal Symptoms originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 10:30:00 EST. The House of Representatives has approved the procedures for a joint resolution that would overturn the FCC's controversial Net neutrality rules. The resolution (PDF) is scheduled for a vote on Thursday in the GOP-controlled House. If it passes, it would then move on to the Democratic-controlled Senate, where its chances of survival are less certain. Even if it passes the Senate, though, the White House would likely veto the measure.
House Moves to Repeal Net Neutrality Rules, Obama's Veto Looms originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 08:46:00 EST. For a little over $8,000, you could be the proud owner of a 75-year-old Marconi television set -- the oldest working TV in Britain. The family of the set's late owner, G.B. Davis, is putting it up for auction later this month in London, where the set will likely sell for more than the $8K experts have projected. When Davis bought it, there was only one channel and one hour of programming every day. It ended up being a good investment, though; he only paid about $160.
Britain's Oldest Working TV Up for Sale 75 Years After Purchase originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 17:50:00 EST. A computer scientist at the University of Buffalo has developed a new program capable of taking automated translation beyond the literal.

Rohini Srihari began working on her software in the hopes of improving computerized translations of Urdu -- a linguistic blend of Hindi and Persian that is widely spoken in Pakistan, and by many Muslims in India. Urdu is a particularly difficult language for computers to translate because its grammar is so different from most Western languages, and its Arabic script can connote important subtleties in meaning. As a result, most digital translations of Urdu remain comparatively basic and literal -- something that Srihari wanted to change.
Continue reading Urdu Translation Software Understands Nuance

Urdu Translation Software Understands Nuance originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 17:10:00 EST.

Jeff Kurze is a 35-year-old man from Michigan who suffers from chronic interstitial nephritis -- a condition that led to kidney failure and forced him to go through dialysis treatments three times per day. Kurze was in dire need of a kidney transplant, but his doctors told him it would likely be three to five years before he could find a donor. With their desperation mounting, Kurze and his wife turned to Facebook, where they found a life-saving solution.

Kurze's wife, Roxy, recently posted a note to the social networking site, explaining her husband's situation and asking for any donors to come forward. The post caught the attention of 25-year-old Ricky Cisco, who immediately contacted the Kurzes and offered his kidney to a man he didn't even know. After conducting some tests, doctors determined that Cisco was a suitable match. Last week, the two men went to the hospital to complete the transplant, and both are currently in good condition.
Continue reading Michigan Man Finds Kidney Donor on Facebook

Michigan Man Finds Kidney Donor on Facebook originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 15:50:00 EST. Bradley Manning, the man suspected of supplying WikiLeaks with thousands of confidential military documents, used unauthorized data-mining software to obtain the information, according to the Army.

The Army alleges that Manning installed the software on computers connected to the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRN), which is believed to be the source of the 250,000 diplomatic cables and 500,000 field reports that WikiLeaks has published. Officials say Manning installed the code once between February 11th and April 3rd, 2010, and a second time around May 4th -- the day he was demoted after getting into a spat with another soldier.
Continue reading Manning Used Data-Mining Software to Obtain Documents, Army Claims

Manning Used Data-Mining Software to Obtain Documents, Army Claims originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 13:40:00 EST. Rather than relying on Facebook Places, users can now check in at events and use Google Maps to visualize where their friends have checked in. And, perhaps best of all, the update allows you to unfriend people directly from your phone. No word yet on when these features will come to Android, but iPhone users can grab the update here.
Facebook iPhone App Update Lets You Unfriend on the Go originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 12:20:00 EST. The U.S. Attorney's Office in New York has filed a lawsuit on behalf of Condé Nast after a scammer named Andy Surface swindled the company out of $8 million. Posing as a rep from printing company Quad/Graphics Inc., Surface sent an electronic payment form to Condé Nast in early November, asking the company to wire future payments to his account in Texas. Condé complied, but discovered the fraud in December. Forbes has an insufferably pun-laden piece on the saga.
According to the Wall Street Journal, federal authorities are looking into whether or not app manufacturers properly disclosed the kinds of personal information their apps collect from users, and whether or not they provided justification for doing so. Failure to notify and inform consumers about data gathering could constitute a violation of federal law, a source close to the investigation explained.
Continue reading New Jersey Feds Call Grand Jury Investigation Into Smartphone Apps

New Jersey Feds Call Grand Jury Investigation Into Smartphone Apps originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 10:00:00 EST.
Frank J. Rybicki, an assistant professor of media studies, reportedly became angry with a female student who seemed to be surfing the Web on her laptop rather than paying attention to class. Frustrated, he shut the laptop and dismissed the student, who immediately began arguing with him.
Continue reading Professor Shuts Student's Laptop in Class, Gets Arrested for Assault

Professor Shuts Student's Laptop in Class, Gets Arrested for Assault originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 09:15:00 EST. The inmate, Juan Carlos Serna, reportedly got his wife to send a fax to the jail, posing as an official order from a regional court. The letter demanded that Serna be released, and was followed by a phone call to confirm. Police then let him stroll out of the facility, in much the same fashion as last October, when Serna pulled the exact same stunt.
Spanish Man Escapes Prison With a Fax...

According to their Twitter page, One Soul Thrust is a "groove-oriented purist rock band from Canada," with "a female singer who whispers and wails like an angel sighing sass in your ear." But One Soul Thrust aren't very well-known. They have fewer than 300 followers on Twitter, and their YouTube channel features a single video that's been viewed barely 300 times. Last week, though, their manager, Cameron Tilbury, discovered that the band's debut album had been illegally downloaded more than 100,000 times. One Soul Thrust, he concluded, had suddenly gone "piracy platinum" -- or so they thought.

Tilbury made his discovery after doing a Google search for the band's downloads on BitTorrent. That led him to a graphic on LimeTorrents, which showed that One Soul Thrust's album had been downloaded 100,000 times. According to the Canadian Recording Industry Association, a band must sell 100,000 copies or downloads of their album, in order to achieve platinum status. Of course, because they didn't actually sell any of the pirated albums, One Soul Thrust couldn't achieve platinum status, and wouldn't see a cent of revenue.
Continue reading Obscure Canadian Band Mistakes Spam for 100K Illegal Downloads

Obscure Canadian Band Mistakes Spam for 100K Illegal Downloads originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 14:19:00 EST. Apple and Intel have both decided to stop using conflict minerals to manufacture products, as part of the Conflict-Free Smelter program.

Conflict minerals include valuable commodities such as gold, titanium, tungsten and tin, which generate massive revenues used to fund wars in Central Africa, and, more specifically, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Beginning next year, all U.S. companies will be required by law to disclose their mineral supplies and identify any purchases that may be linked to the Congo conflict. By agreeing to the Conflict-Free Smelter program, though, Apple and Intel have effectively given themselves a head-start, which could help mitigate future controversy.
Continue reading Apple, Intel Vow to Stop Using Conflict Minerals From Africa

Apple, Intel Vow to Stop Using Conflict Minerals From Africa originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 12:40:00 EST.
In his new book, 'In the Plex,' tech journalist Steven Levy traces the history of Google and exposes some juicy details about the company along the way.

The New York Times recently reviewed an advanced copy of the book, and highlighted some of its most interesting revelations. Eric Schmidt, for example, reportedly wanted to censor some Google search results in order to hide a political donation he made during his tenure as the company's CEO. His plans were derailed, however, when Google exec Sheryl Sandberg said it was "unacceptable," according to the Times. (Company spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker says Schmidt denies Levy's allegations.)
Continue reading New Book on Google Reveals Details on China, CEO's Political Donations

New Book on Google Reveals Details on China, CEO's Political Donations originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 11:54:00 EST. Google's Gmail Motion hoax might not be so far-fetched after all. A group of post-doc students at USC's Institute for Creative Technologies has turned Google's April Fools' joke into reality, using their software engineering skills and Microsoft Kinect motion sensors.

The adult film industry is up in arms over 'Porn WikiLeaks' -- a new site offering the real names, birth dates and other private information belonging to more than 15,000 adult actors and actresses.

As Gawker reported last week, Porn WikiLeaks obtained this information from a patient database at an STD testing clinic in California. In addition to the porn stars' real names, the leaked database from the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation (AIM) contained their home addresses, information on their family members, and copies of their state ID cards. Most entries posted to Porn WikiLeaks feature only an actor's name, date of birth and stage name -- basic, but potentially disastrous information for any ex-performer looking to hide his or her past. Some entries go much further.
Continue reading 'Porn Wikileaks' Reveals Adult Stars' Real Names, Home Addresses

'Porn Wikileaks' Reveals Adult Stars' Real Names, Home Addresses originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 09:35:00 EST. The online marketer, Epsilon, sends out more than 40 billion email ads and offers each year, typically to users who register with a company's website, or give their email addresses while shopping online. On Friday, Epsilon announced that a hacker had gained access to its clients' customer files, which contain personal information on individual consumers.
Continue reading Massive Data Breach Leaks Customer Names, Email Addresses

Massive Data Breach Leaks Customer Names, Email Addresses originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 08:44:00 EST. During an address at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday, James Cameron introduced what he considers to be the next frontier in filmmaking: faster film projection rates.

It may not sound quite as sexy as some other cinematic techniques that Cameron has pioneered, but, according to the 'Avatar' director, faster frame rates could dramatically enhance image quality across all film genres. Today, movies are shot at 24 frames per second (fps), which has become the industry standard. As Cameron pointed out, however, this standard was established in 1927, with the release of 'The Jazz Singer,' adding that a change is long overdue.
Continue reading James Cameron to Shoot 'Avatar' Sequels at Higher Frame Rates, Aiming for 'Reality'

James Cameron to Shoot 'Avatar' Sequels at Higher Frame Rates, Aiming for 'Reality' originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 02 Apr 2011 12:00:00 EST. Schmidt finished his Google tenure with an approval rating of 96-percent, according to an employee survey conducted by Glassdoor.com. That score was barely enough to edge out Jobs, who boasts a piddly 95-percent approval rating, down from 98-percent last year. The biggest loser? That would be Yahoo's Carol Bartz, whose rating plummeted by 27 points since last year.
Eric Schmidt (Slightly) More Popular Than Steve Jobs, Employee Survey Says originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 02 Apr 2011 09:00:00 EST. Thing is, you'll have to keep moving at all times, in order to "energize" your on-screen character. The minute you stop bouncing around, your thumb stick will be disabled, your character will freeze, and fatness will ensue.
U-Move Wii Controller Will Keep You Moving, Won't Take No For an Answer originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 17:55:00 EST.
Last week, 7-year-old Ukailya Lofton attached Jolly Rancher candies to the ends of her braids in celebration of her school's picture day. The hairstyle reportedly amused Lofton's computer teacher, who allegedly took a picture of the child with her cell phone and shared it on Facebook. "She took a picture of me and then she said my boyfriend can't believe this," Lofton told Chicago's ABC7.
Continue reading Chicago Teacher Accused of Ridiculing 7-Year-Old Student on Facebook

Chicago Teacher Accused of Ridiculing 7-Year-Old Student on Facebook originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 17:09:00 EST.
