Norwegian Men in Scuba Gear Chase Google Street View Car

Digging up hilarious, candid shots captured on Google Street View has quickly become one of our favorite online pastimes. But as much as we love watching an unsuspecting weirdo suddenly become digitally immortalized for all the world to see, a couple of dudes in Norway may have just orchestrated the greatest Google Maps hoax ever.

As BoingBoing reports, photos recently captured by Google's Street View car show very clear pictures of a couple of guys dressed in full scuba gear, chasing after the car with what appears to be a pitchfork. Why scuba? No one knows. But we don't care. This is unequivocally bodacious. A reporter from Dagbladet in Norway tracked down these scuba saboteurs, and, if we understand the poor translation correctly, Borre Erstadt and Paul Age Olsen waited over an hour for the Google car to pass them after hearing that it would be cruising around their neighborhood last July. It seems like they chilled in lawn chairs to pass the time (evidence here), which sort of makes the whole thing even more amazing. As it turns out, they made it on to Google's recently unveiled Norwegian Street View.

Facebook Survey Charts U.S. Social Networking Borders

Author Joel Garreau, who also serves as an editor at the Washington Post, has attracted a cult following among social scientists with his revolutionary work 'The Nine Nations of North America.' In the book, Garreau argues that states have become obsolete, and that North America should be reapportioned based on geographical, social, cultural, and economic factors.

Pete Warden, a former engineer for Apple, has taken a new approach to Garreau's segmentation by applying it to social networking. Warden analyzed profiles, fan pages, and corporate accounts of millions of Facebook members in order to determine his own United States of Social Networking.

Not Only Do They Have Youth, But Young Gamers Have Skills, Too

If you grew up playing 'Pac-Man,' 'Space Invaders,' and 'Pole Position,' you'd think that, with all those years of gameplay under your belt, you'd have a leg up on younger gamers. That is, until you get your ass shredded in 'Modern Warfare 2' by the mortar fire of a pipsqueak young enough to be your son.

According to Wired, there's a reason for that. "The younger guys have much more refined motor skills, [having grown up] with more-advanced systems," David Walsh told the mag. At the ripe old age of 25, Walsh is the oldest member of Major League Gaming, and does bring up a valid point. While some of us grew up playing simplistic games like 'Pong,' kids these days are routinely exposed to games with intricate 3-D graphics, complex physics, and gameplay that requires sharp reflexes and multiple key or button presses. The result is that the current crop of kids develop better gaming skills at a younger age. Of course, it also doesn't hurt that they have more spare time than the older set.

iPhone 'BirdBox' Brings the Sweet Sounds of the Outdoors Into Your Bedroom

What's the best sound in the world to wake up hearing? A rooster crowing? Not unless you're a hungry fox. How about an alarm clock blaring in your ear? Not even close. But what if somebody found a way to combine the sounds of fowls' cries and that foul device? Well, they have, and it's called BirdBox. It just might be the cutest (and maybe simultaneously annoying) app we've come across.

According to Gizmodo, the bundled hardware and software turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a bird's nest/alarm clock. You pay $12.75, and a cardboard birdhouse will show up in your mailbox. (It comes in four colors.) Then, you download the "free" app to your device. It's a standard alarm clock, and includes features like snooze and night mode. But the BirdBox also displays video of real, chirping baby birds while you sleep. Just plug in your phone, drop it inside the birdhouse, tap the screen, and enjoy the sights and sounds of winged, disease-carrying critters.

NVIDIA Optimus Switches Between High Performance and Battery Savings

NVIDIA Optimus Makes Switchable Graphics Easy
There's nothing new about a laptop that can switch between a low-power, integrated graphics processor (IGP), which extends battery life, and a high-end discreet chip, which gives a little extra graphics "oomph." That process is often a little problematic, however, frequently requiring a user to manually switch over, or even forcing a reboot.

Today, NVIDIA unveiled Optimus, which aims to make switching between the two modes completely seamless. Optimus uses software profiles to detect whether or not an application requires extra graphic muscle, and then automatically switches between the two different video processors. So, if you're just browsing the Web or working in Excel, Optimus sticks with the low-key IGP. Play an HD video or launch 'Crysis,' however, and it will automatically switch to the high-powered chip.

'Pac-Man' Arcade Cake: The Ultimate Gift for a Geek Goof With a Sweet Tooth

Thanks in part to some popular reality-TV shows, the boutique cake business has really taken off in recent years. Growing up, we were lucky to get a birthday cake with a few plastic soldiers or athletes standing in the thick frosting. But these days, people build edible replicas of everything from Hogwarts Castle to an old-school NES console. So what would be the perfect confectionery ...

Street View Snowmobile Gives Vantage From Olympic Mountain (Sadly Not Mount Olympus)

Admittedly, we're not exactly thrilled about the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. We don't even understand the rules of half the events. But leave it to Google to make the games (or at least the location) a little more exciting. To do this, some enterprising engineers and camera operators are taking Google Street View to new heights -- literally. According to the Official ...

'AcneApp' Claims to Incinerate Zits While You Talk, Teens Rejoice

For every iPhone app that actually serves a worthwhile purpose (even if that purpose is only to amuse the user), there are hundreds of useless offerings that are only meant to dupe unwitting shoppers. Technology has also given rise to an influx of "snakeoil" gadgets that weasel money out of gullible consumers with false promises. Dr. Greg Pearson has devised an iPhone app that, upon first ...

Courts to Jurors: Please Stop Tweeting, For Realz

So, we don't even know where to start with this one. It seems as though jurors serving on active court cases are tweeting details about the trials. Really? Yes. The Judicial Conference of the United States, which frames policy for federal courts, issued an updated set of model jury instructions late last month to explicitly prohibit sharing and researching trial information through the ...
