13th Century Platformer 'L'Abbaye des Morts' is as Retro as You Can Get

L'abbaye des morts
Some say that the only certainties in the world are death and taxes, but if anyone's made a compelling game about the latter, well, we want to play it. Death, on the other hand, is everywhere in games. This week, we'll take a look at a few games about The End, from the poignant to the hilarious. And no zombie games, we promise.

'L'Abbaye des Morts' is a creepy platformer that uses both 13th century history and retro graphics to playfully explore a decidedly grim period in history. You play a Cathar monk who, in an attempt to escape persecution, ventures into a mysterious church to evade his pursuers. Of course, the church hides deadly secrets, which can be unraveled by uncovering scrolls. As you descend into the hidden recesses beneath the church, you'll have to contend with a horde of diabolical enemies, using only your wits and evasive skills. (Catharism was a non-violent religion.) As with anything designer Locomalito touches, 'L'Abbaye des Morts' is both lovingly retro and flawlessly executed, right down to its fake box art.

'L'Abbaye des Morts' is a free PC download.
