Instaprint Creates Inkless, On-Demand Photo Prints From Instagram Snaps

Capitalizing on people's nostalgia for old Polaroid prints, a company called Breakfast will soon beta-test a location-based printer that will create inkless, on-demand photos from the Instagram iPhone app. Instaprint, as it's called, automatically prints photos that are taken with Instagram app and tagged with a specific location or hashtag. Next week, Breakfast will show off two printers to SXSW, where conference attendees can use the hashtag #SXSW. If you tag a photo with #instaprint before March 10th, you can watch the photo be printed and posted live on Instaprint's site. The photos are created with a thermal printing technology called ZINK -- which is also used in modern Polaroid prints --- that doesn't use ink. Aside from real-time printing, your photos will be archived online for your viewing pleasure, as well.

Meh. While I do love the iPhone app, it still doesn't satisfy as a substitute for Polaroid instant photos. Fuji did a better job following up with Polaroid style cameras and film. As a photographer though, I'd really love to see another company produce something similar to Polaroid 55 film.

As someone who has been using Instagram since it went public, I'm really happy with all the great things people are making post-API-release. Folks, at first, complained that the community was restricted by being iPhone only, with no website to access it, but now look at all the features we're getting!
