Two-Faced Kyocera Echo Brings Dual-Screen Android to Sprint

Submerged in a giant tank, magician David Blaine kicked off last night's Sprint event in New York with an eight-minute, fish-filled, underwater routine that we still can't quite connect to the evening's Android announcements. Following Blaine's magic, a giant Kyocera Edge pushed out onto the stage and Sprint proceeded to show off the odd dual-screen phone. The Android 2.2-powered Edge packs two 3.5-inch screens that can be unfolded to create a 4.7-inch viewing surface.

The Echo runs a modified version of Android that lets you "simultask" (rebranded multitasking, apparently) and run different apps, or different parts of apps, simultaneously on each screen. For example, one screen will display all of your latest e-mail, while the other reveals a full-screen e-mail composition window. So far, only e-mail, browser, messaging and several other core apps can take advantage of the dual screens; all other third party apps simply fill both screens. One exception, though, is EA's 'Sims 3' game, which has been modified to use one screen for displaying your Sims' world and the other for menus and controls.

Smaller than a Nintendo DS, it's not a bulky device -- it fit our pockets just fine -- but it sadly lacks a front-facing camera and only runs on 3G and Wi-Fi. The software we played with was an early release, but despite the 1GHZ Snapdragon processor, it still lagged when swiping between the home screens. That said, it's definitely a unique form factor and it'll be interesting to see if developers and consumers sign up when it lands in Sprint stores later this year, at $199.

Watching Twitter tonight has taught me one thing, Phillies fans are a bunch of whiny dicks. But it's ok, every tank needs a bottom feeder.
