The Daily, First Dedicated iPad 'Newspaper' Launches

The Daily iPad App
Earlier today, the world finally got its first peak at 'The Daily,' the news publication created explicitly for the iPad by Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch's brainchild is designed to leverage the multimedia capabilities of the tablet in order to create an interactive and immersive digital magazine for getting your daily dose of information. Important daily news, sports, celebrity gossip and even app reviews (complete with links to the app store) will all have a place in the roughly 100 pages of content published every day. Articles will obviously feature text and photos, but you'll also find 360-degree panoramic images paired with some stories, as well as video, audio, interactive charts and infographics.

As you'd expect, you'll be able to share some stories via Twitter, Facebook and e-mail, and you'll get an option to save articles for reading later. As with any other digital publication, you'll be able to comment on posts; but, in addition to text, you'll be able to leave audio comments (which sounds like a horrible gimmick that nobody will use). The Daily's ability to pull in live content from the Web was shown off by rotating the iPad while reading a celebrity gossip piece. In landscape mode, the article disappeared and the Twitter feeds for two celebrities mentioned in the piece were pulled up.

The Daily iPad App

'The Daily' will eventually head to other tablets (as we imagine Google is quite eager to get a version for its new Honeycomb OS very soon) -- but, for now, the app will be iOS only. Users who pay for a subscription, though, will also be able read stories on the Web.

'The Daily' is available now in the App Store. Subscriptions can be purchased for either $0.99 per week, or $39.99 per year -- which, we shouldn't have to tell you, is significantly cheaper than your average ink-and-dead-tree newspaper. (The New York Times, for example, costs a rather painful $11.70 a week, or over $600 per year.) If you're a little hesitant about coughing up even a measly $0.99 for an unproven publication owned by the same man behind Fox News and The New York Post, you can try 'The Daily' for free during its first two weeks, thanks to a partnership with Verizon.
