New Hack Turns Any Smartphone Into an Eavesdropping Device
Security researcher Ralf-Philipp Weinmann has recently found a way to turn smartphones -- both Android- and iOS-based -- into remote listening devices. The hack is far from simple, and requires some serious hacking chops to pull off, but it's not so unrealistic that a dedicated, would-be spy couldn't turn any phone they desired into an eavesdropping device. The trick involves hacking a phone's baseband by setting up a fake cell phone tower and connecting to a target device. The hacker could then transmit malicious code that would activate a phone's auto-answer feature, with the user being none the wiser. That means not only are conversations over your phone vulnerable, but so are those you have while simply near your phone. While there's probably little danger of your offline conversations being eaves-dropped upon by a nosy neighbor or jealous ex, it could be a serious concern for government officials or business execs. Baseband hacking isn't going to be the new frontier in credit card theft; as a tool for espionage, though, it's a very worrisome possibility.
