Iomega Partners With Boxee, Enters Streaming Media Market

Iomega TV with Boxee
It's been pretty obvious since day one that Boxee envisioned its software running on a variety of devices, and that the D-Link Boxee Box was just the beginning. Now Iomega (of Zip Drive fame) wants in on the burgeoning streaming media box market and, instead of flocking to Google TV, it picked the upstarts at Boxee to power its new line of Iomega TV devices.

Though the outward design is decidedly un-Boxee like (the Iomega TV looks more or less like a USB hard drive) inside you'll find essentially the same components as the Boxee Box, including an Atom processor. The Iomega TV even comes with a remote control that sports a QWERTY keyboard. The $229.99 base model is not terribly different from the Boxee Box outside of its appearance. But things get interesting when you spring for one of the slightly higher priced models that packs either a 1TB or 2TB hard drive (for $299.99 and $349.99, respectively). Your Iomega TV can then act as a networked drive where you can dump all your movies and television shows and have them play back locally. And, as we discovered already, Boxee can play back practically any file you throw at it. The Iomega TV with Boxee will go on sale in the next few months at J&R.
