Army Wants to Issue Battle-Ready iPhone and Android Phones

Army Issued iPhones American soldiers could soon find smartphones in their standard-issue equipment packages. The Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) is examining ways to modernize the U.S. military using gadgets like the iPhone, iPad, Kindle and Android handsets. In February, the Army will start testing phones and applications, and, in January, will start testing iPhone-based Common Access Card readers. The Army is hoping to offer seamless access to information, regardless of whether soldiers are on base or on the battlefield. The phones could be used to provide up-to-the-minute intelligence updates and image feeds from overhead drones. Soldiers will be happy to hear that the Army is even considering footing the monthly cell phone bills. The details are still being ironed out, but it's possible that personnel will be given a monthly stipend to pay for minutes and apps.

Plenty of work is left to be done before the program truly takes off. First and foremost, the military will have to prove that it can secure its data transmissions. Feeding data and surveillance footage to soldiers in the field is only useful if the enemy can intercept that information. The Army said it's open to any combination of hardware, provided it can be deployed with minimal after-market modifications. Soldiers may even be offered a choice of devices, based on whether they prefer iPhone or Android, provided the necessary applications can run securely on the platform.

Watching Twitter tonight has taught me one thing, Phillies fans are a bunch of whiny dicks. But it's ok, every tank needs a bottom feeder.
