See Photos of WikiLeaks' James Bond-Like Data Headquarters

The data center sits at the site of a former bunker, which was reopened in 2008, and redesigned by Swedish architect Albert France-Lanord. France-Lanord reportedly wanted to recreate the kind of underground futuristic space that would be worthy of a James Bond set -- and he certainly did a good job. With a "floating" conference room, suspended glass hallways, and lunar landscape floor, the Pionen headquarters seems tailor-made for international espionage -- or, in Assange's case, ego-stroking. Old German U-boat engines serve as back-up generators, while artificial waterfalls serve absolutely no real purpose.
Pionen also houses dozens of servers belonging to other companies, and could reportedly withstand a nuclear attack. If these photos are to be believed, and if Wikileaks truly is storing all of its data there, it would really only confirm one thing: Julian Assange is absolutely crazy.

Who is funding this guy and why?
Gary M.Dec 10th 2010 1:36PM
@pinsolomons Why George Soros and his cronies. Soros and his followers have a very dark plan forthe US. Namely, to destroy it not by warfare but by ideaology and manipulation of people in power. So much for Robert Gibbs, Pres Sec to Obama saying "we shouldn't be afraid of some guy with a $35 domain name and a lap top..." This is cyber terrorism plane and simple.
ianfirestoneDec 10th 2010 2:41PM
@pinsolomons Anyone who cares about freedom, holding governments accountable to their people, civil rights and justice ought to be funding WikiLeaks. What do you want, global fascism?
UnemployedMenEverywhereDec 11th 2010 1:12AM
@pinsolomons If you don't know, you're not too late to be saved.. George Soros is funding them along with most other "organizations" whose mission it is to disempower the United States. Obama "secretly" supports Assange (notice Obama didn't even comment on it).. It wouldn't surprise me if certain individuals within the Obama regime were helping Assange as well. You need to read up on the Progressive Movement in the United States. They were also behind Obamacare too.. Most anything that damages U.S. global power (yes, the BP "spill" was also no accident) and domestic (personal freedom) as well. Most leaks and spills have Soros/Obama written all over them! Hey kids, START READING UP ON THIS STUFF BEFORE THE SECRET POLICE COME KNOCKING DOWN OUR FRONT DOORS.

@pinsolomons Uhhh, probably the people who pay him money to lease out server space? The same way people who own servers make money from every hosted website on earth? Why do you hate capitalism?
aboyden2010Dec 10th 2010 7:11AM
Ok seriously: That place looks like the CDC Bunker of the show The Walking Dead. I know someone will agree with me LOL because it really does. I find that a bit humorous.
BaumerjetDec 10th 2010 11:37PM
@aboyden2010
Actually, the CDC bunker was a play on Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove."
Though, you are right, it does look like that type of 1960's spy location...

I do not necessarily agree with the actions of Assange and his colleagues, but I am disgusted by the tone of your story. The obvious fact that you don't like Assange or the goals or actions of his organization does not make it acceptable to turn a profile of these offices into an ad hominem attack. It is really small of you to describe this creatively renovated industrial workspace as "ego-stroking." It is equally disingenuous to describe the waterfalls, which have been a common design element in many corporate office complexes for years, as serving "absolutely no real purpose." The truly "unbelievable" part of this story is your own statement that "Julian Assange is absolutely crazy." I find that simply malicious. It makes me wonder whether you have a personal reason to smear Assange and his work because of the embarrassing leaks we have seen, or are just making this story inflammatory to increase the likelihood that it will be read. I'm sorry, did I miss your mental health credentials or a shred of objective evidence for your comments? Perhaps I should adopt one of your favorite words and say I find your story "absolutely" chauvinistic. I liked the pictures, though.

@Joe Taylor I agree with you 100%. Where did you say you where from??
Bob PaulusDec 10th 2010 1:07PM
@Joe Taylor I couldn't have said it better myself.

Dude, take a chill pill. It's an article, he's allowed to spin it as he sees fit. He doesn't work for CNN or a news agency that is supposed to be unbiased, as far as I can tell.

No different than what Sarah Palin is going to do to the Republicans . She will threaten to run as a Teabagger and split the party if she isn't given a run as Republican. Wikeleaks is small time as opposed to the damage to the world Sarah is capable of.
eddiDec 10th 2010 7:55AM
bunch of money making burocrats trying to shut down the truth from a group of individuals just like you guys and i that are tired of the high paying taxes and lying bs this us goverment always had. thas all when you speak the truth you actions will follow!!!when was the last time we had a decent and real report about any of the wars that the us gets involved in? come on wake up, this country needs to get real pretty soon or we all going into a civil war. and trust me hackers always have the upper hand.
jtalc58909Dec 10th 2010 10:42AM
@eddi Where did he get the funding for this? Certainly not thru donations from the morons that champion his cause. They are all the backseaters saying "Yeah, he's the best, you go girl" while they hide under their little blankies in the closet writing moronic comments on the AOL boards. They are all big talk no action and certainly NO money!

Wow, this is a bad article. How the hell does the design of the data center confirm "Julian Assange is absolutely crazy"? First of all, he didn't design it. Second of all, while unusually cool looking, it is not " a little too unbelievable" as far as hosted data centers go. They are usually concrete buildings or built underground with high security and excessive redundancy. As far as the suspended walkways and artificial waterfalls "serve absolutely no real purpose", that is also untrue. They are there for the 'wow factor' when showing the space to potential customers. Aesthetics matter when you are selling something.
Next time, don't ruin a 'this is a really cool looking data center' article with biased political commentary.
stephentisDec 10th 2010 8:49AM
Mr President, please shut these people down because they are making a mockery of the US.
