Fire Up Your Speed Skills For Indie Platformer 'Orton and the Princess'

'Orton and the Princess' is an exercise in video game masochism, but -- despite its unrelenting difficulty -- the seemingly simple challenge keeps you riveted. The goal of each level in this platformer is straightforward: guide the quadrilateral Orton through a series of leaping challenges until he reaches the equally polygonal Princess. While the game's pleasant look and rustic soundtrack may lull you into a false sense of security, each level is chock full of precise jumps that require you to land perilously close to death-dealing spikes. Controls are simple (use the arrow keys for movement and X to jump) and everything is tight enough that you have only yourself to blame for each misstep. Not only is the game tricky, but it's also aware of its own difficulty, with a narrator that taunts you mercilessly as you die again and again (and again). It may be formidable, but it's the kind of well-made, old-school challenge that can be hard to come by these days.
