Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales Wonders if You Can Spot Him $16 Million

Wikipedia needs money
Some of you may have noticed recently, while making one of those all-too-familiar sojourns to look up useless info about canceled TV shows and dead celebrities, that there's a giant banner across the top of Wikipedia. It directs you to a page that asks (nay, begs) for donations to help sustain the world's largest free and community-editable repository of knowledge. Last year, during its annual fundraiser, Wikipedia collected over $8 million. This year, though, the organization aims to double that amount and raise $16 million. Ten-year-old Wikipedia is now the 12th most popular site in the U.S., and the fifth most heavily trafficked globally, with over 400 million unique visitors every month. That's double the traffic it drew in 2007, and a large part of why the site needs so much cash to stay free and afloat. In addition to asking for money, Wikipedia is also encouraging new members to edit and contribute to articles to help the site continue to improve and grow.

The fundraiser will run until January. You can donate here or by clicking on the large "a personal appeal from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales" banner at the top of the Wikipedia homepage.
