Lonely Astronauts and Galactic Mysteries Keep 'Morningstar' Gripping

'Morningstar' is a great little sci-fi adventure that recalls predecessors like 'The Dig' and 'The Journeyman Project.' After the Morningstar spaceship crash lands on a mysterious planet, it's up to you to get things repaired -- and, more importantly, to find out why you crashed in the first place. The game takes place from a first-person perspective, through which you'll click around your field of vision in order to manipulate objects and acquire items, as well as move through the environment. Like any traditional adventure game, you'll have to use items cleverly, experimenting with placement and combination. (Thankfully, the game's puzzles make far more sense than the obfuscated logic of LucasArts and Sierra adventures.) Aside from sometimes requiring a magnifying glass to locate certain items, the game straightforwardly weaves an interesting, compact story with panache. The illustrations add the right amount of atmosphere, despite the scarce appearance of actual animation. 'Morningstar' is perfect for those in the mood for a quick, compelling and contemplative sci-fi adventure.
