Welcome to Japan, Mr. Obama: Shrieking Seal and Dancing Fembot Greet the POTUS

barack obama with hrp-4c
When greeting foreign dignitaries, first impressions are important. Perhaps Japan was operating in accordance with some apocryphal page from Emily Post when it decided to welcome attendees to the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit with the Paro animatronic seal, the singing/dancing HRP-4C fembot and an awkward single-seat vehicle from Toyota. Judging from the look on his face, President Obama was at least a little perplexed by the robo-reception.

Watch the video after the break to see our commander in chief uncomfortably pet a shrieking Paro, and interact with one of Japan's countless uncanny humanoid 'bots. Obama then squeezes his six-foot-one-inch frame into the i-Real, a personal mobility vehicle from Toyota that lies somewhere between a Segway and an NYPD tricycle.
