Scientists Researching PTSD-Soothing Properties of 'Tetris'

tetrisAlthough frequently overshadowed by fervent game-haters, scientists continue to illuminate the particularly valuable benefits of 'Tetris' and its block-dropping action. One 2009 study indicated that playing Tetris improves various mental skills. Oxford University performed a separate study in the same year that even determined the game "may reduce the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)."

Scientists have now performed subsequent research on gaming and PTSD, specifically about whether or not other games provide the same benefits as Tetris. The findings reinforce the conclusions of the previous Oxford study, which stated that playing Tetris within a specific time frame can positively alter the way negative memories are formed following a traumatic event.

According to LiveScience, though, some (seemingly innocuous) games do indeed spark negative mental consequences. Whereas playing Tetris reportedly reduces the frequency of PTSD-related flashbacks, playing the trivia game 'Pub Quiz' actually produces the opposite effect. In explaining the different reactions, the scientists point to the way Tetris manipulates the brain's "sensory channel," and the fact that games like Pub Quiz affect the brain's "conceptual channel."

The scientific terminology may seem a little formal and boring, but you can always perform some independent analysis. Just play the traumatic and agonizing 'Hatetris,' followed immediately by a session with the benevolent and soothing original.
