'Wizard's Run' Adds an RPG Spin to the Shoot 'Em Up Genre

'Wizard's Run' is a combination of shmup and RPG, in which your conjurer accrues experience while blasting away at vicious ogre hordes on a vertically scrolling battlefield. You use that experience to upgrade your character's spells, each in one of three elemental categories. You can choose to focus on pyromancy, and spend your experience points on upgrading your fireball attack. Or, you can go the chillier route, and learn ice magic, freezing foes in their tracks. Or, even better, you can revisit previous stages for experience -- and thus acquire every available magical upgrade -- before becoming a true sorcerer supreme. Up to three spells can be used at a time, assigned to the 'Z,' 'X' and 'C' keys, allowing you to have both offensive and defensive magic on hand. 'Wizard's Run' is graphically simplistic, but, considering how insanely tough most shmups are, we appreciate any game that gives us the ability to actually improve our chances without having to develop superhuman hand-eye coordination.
