Queen Elizabeth II Joins Facebook, Avoids Friendship

british monarchy on facebook
She may be 84-years old, but Queen Elizabeth II is clearly a teenager at heart. She has an iPod. She's on Twitter. She even has her own 3-D glasses. And now, Her Majesty has finally made the jump to Facebook.

Today, the British Monarchy launched its very own Facebook page, where users can find all the latest photos, videos and news on the Queen, Prince William and the rest of the fam. The page's 'Near Me' application also allows fans to discover royal events happening in their immediate vicinity, while the digitized Court Circular gives a run down of all the latest (non-scandalous) news out of Buckingham Palace. Although Her Majesty has yet to personally use Facebook, herself, she reportedly played a major role in the launch. "The decision went right up to the Queen," a Palace official told the AP. "If you are going to have an online presence in 2010, you just have to be on Facebook."

According to the Telegraph, more than 40,000 Facebook users "liked" the page within its very first hour of existence; and, with over 60,000 fans at this moment, the page certainly seems on track to overtake the 70,000 followers the Queen has on Twitter. Unfortunately, though, Her Majesty's page isn't personal, meaning you won't be able to friend or poke her. Such behavior, apparently, would be uncivilized.
