Mysterious PlayStation Phone Finally Surfaces

Rumors about a PlayStation cell phone platform have been swirling for several years, and Engadget scored the scoop about an actual PlayStation Phone in August. Now, Engadget hounds have obtained photographic evidence of the oft-doubted device, reportedly code-named "Zeus." It apparently features Android 2.X (although 3.0 will reportedly be the official OS), a 1 GHz Qualcomm processor, 512 megabytes of RAM, an approximately 4-inch screen and a standard PS button configuration. A Sony Marketplace option will also enable instant and effortless access to downloadable content.

The PS3 appears to be languishing somewhat, as it now ranks below both the Xbox 360 and Wii in terms of overall console sales. However, Sony's PSP handheld remains an established favorite. Mobile online platforms (particularly those with phone capabilities) represent a ripe gaming market, and both OnLive and Panasonic are rapidly approaching the completion of their own connected portables. Engadget seems confident that Zeus will land in 2011, which -- considering the PS3's slide in popularity and that increasingly crowded video game field -- can't come soon enough.
