Google Doodle Celebrates Dizzy Gillespie's Birthday

dizzy on google
If you ask today's casual jazz listener to name some of history's transformative musicians, they'll probably rattle off names like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington or Charlie Parker, before getting around to Dizzy Gillespie. Google, however, certainly hasn't forgotten the legendary jazz trumpeter, and, in honor of what would've been his 93rd birthday, unveiled a dizzyingly colorful homepage doodle.

The doodle features Gillespie's silhouette in all blue, with his trademark puffy cheeks highlighted in bright orange. While some, at first glance, may mistakenly identify the figure as the equally puffy-cheeked Louis Armstrong, the trumpet's peculiar angle should be a dead giveaway for most jazz aficionados. Granted, the design probably isn't as instantly recognizable as, say, the John Lennon doodle that Google unveiled a couple of weeks ago. But, considering the enormous influence that Dizzy had on 20th century music, it's certainly a well-deserved tribute. Salt peanuts!
