Chief software architect at
Microsoft Ray Ozzie was digging though his archives when he stumbled across a folder dated November 20th, 1985. Inside was the
original press release and related materials for the release of Windows 1.0. The presser includes quotes from the likes of
Bill Gates, who proclaims, "Windows provides unprecedented power to users today and a foundation for hardware and software advancements of the next few years." As we know "the next few years" is still going. As we approach the 25th anniversary of the release of
Windows 1.0, the vast majority of computer users are still running a (distant) descendant of the then fledgling OS. In fact, Windows 1.0 wasn't even a proper operating system, but rather a layer simply run on top of an aging
DOS core.
You can read the
entire release here. There's nothing Earth-shattering in its marketing speak-laden pages, but it's an entertaining piece of nostalgia, and a surefire way to make those of you who remember Windows 1.0 feel old.
