'Portal' Goes Flash in 'My First Quantum Translocator'

We've extolled the virtues of platforming games in the past, but, with fresh indie platformers popping up constantly, we figured it was a good time to revamp our list. Running, jumping and jumping higher: there's a simple and Zen-like quality in this sort of gameplay that we often find missing in modern titles. Thankfully, Flash and indie development has been ideal for nostalgic genres, keeping sidescrollers alive in the HD era. This week, we'll take a look at some current platformers that have us addicted.

We'll go on record as saying that 'Portal' is the most innovative game of the last decade, if not the very best. While the brevity of its roughly five hours of gameplay were essential to the experience, we were left craving more. So, when we encounter a good game that reminds us of 'Portal,' we're all over it. While clearly taking 'Portal' as its inspiration, 'My First Quantum Translocator' is still unique enough in its execution to not feel like a copycat. The game centers on a versatile teleportation mechanic, as players place a teleportation marker along their path, using the W key, and then hit spacebar to instantly reappear at the marker's location. Using inertia to reach great heights -- by jumping and teleporting at the same time -- is the name of the game. 'My First Quantum Translocator' is perfect for a quick and free fix, keeping Valve fans going until 'Portal 2' arrives.
