Netflix on PS3 Ditches the Disc, Goes 1080p, Adds 5.1 Surround

Netflix on PS3On October 18th, the PlayStation 3 will get a serious update, making it the platform for movies streamed from Netflix. First off, owners will be able to ditch the disc for playback; Netflix will now be an installable app. (Take that Wii!) But the big news is that films will now be streamed in 1080p with 5.1 surround sound. (Take that, everyone!) Netflix will eventually offer the higher-quality media across other platforms, but, for the immediate future, the PS3 will be the only game in town if you want your Netflix in "full HD."

The new Netflix app will also have a revamped interface that will finally offer proper search capabilities and faster load times. All we can do is wish the Xbox, Wii and Roku the best of luck.
