Apple Trademarks Extremely Valuable 'There's an App for That' Slogan
Score one for intellectual property and the closing of linguistic expression! Apple has been awarded a trademark for the phrase "there's an app for that" to the chagrin of unimaginative competitors and poor parodists. (Yes, we did it, too.) Just as Facebook has been trying to protect its brand from any company using either "face" or "book" in its name, Apple seems to think that anyone employing the "app for that" phrase could confuse or mislead potential consumers. After all, "there's an app for that" is something, much like a U2 song, that will outlive us all, speak to generations 200 years in the future about the culture from which they've sprung, and stand as a testament to late-aughts artistry, inspiration and sheer pioneering moxie. In fact, let's all write to the Library of Congress -- wait, let's go all the way to the Vatican Library! -- demanding that "Face," "Book" and "There's an app for that" be acquired, buried under 100 feet of reinforced concrete, and protected by a 24-hour, ex-Nicaraguan militia. They're that valuable.
