'Pixevo' Flash Platformer Turns Your Browser Into a Pixel Evolution

Pixevo
We've extolled the virtues of platforming games in the past, but, with fresh indie platformers popping up constantly, we figured it was a good time to revamp our list. Running, jumping and jumping higher: there's a simple and Zen-like quality in this sort of gameplay that we often find missing in modern titles. Thankfully, Flash and indie development has been ideal for nostalgic genres, keeping sidescrollers alive in the HD era. This week, we'll take a look at some current platformers that have us addicted.

'Pixevo' is a bite-sized game brewed from an equal mix of exploration and challenge. Gamers start off as a single square who must explore a maze-like landscape, collecting judiciously placed pixels. Once enough pixels have been gathered, the character will evolve, slowly sprouting limbs and gaining new abilities, which need to be harnessed to reach ever more painfully placed pixels. Controls are simple, arrow keys determining movement and the 'E' key controlling object manipulation (once you've grown arms, that is). Luckily, the controls are tight and responsive, as some of the game's leaps must be timed with expert precision. Curious about our final pixelated form, we stayed stuck for an embarrassingly long time hunting the last pixel.
