First NBA 3-D Broadcast to Be Heat vs. Knicks on ESPN in December

ESPN to broadcast Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks game in 3-D.
This year, we've seen professional baseball games broadcast in 3-D, and according to The New York Times, NBA fans can watch the world's first basketball game broadcast in 3-D when the Miami Heat visit the New York Knicks on December 17th. ESPN 3-D will broadcast the game, which will be one of eight regular season and six playoff games broadcast on the channel this season. The decision to broadcast the Heat vs. Knicks game in 3-D makes perfect sense for two reasons: the allure of watching a Heat team led by LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in 3-D could attract new viewers to ESPN's fledgling 3-D channel, and New York City is the biggest media market in the country. Along with that, the NBA hopes to plan 3-D viewings in Asia during this season to further bolster its popularity overseas.

But how many people actually own 3-D TVs? The Times reports that about 500,000 3-D TVs have been shipped to dealers and cites a September Nielsen survey that found 25-percent of viewers who had not seen a 3-D TV were "very likely" to buy one. However, that number was cut in half after viewers actually saw a 3-D TV in action.
