PayPal iPhone App Lets Users Deposit Checks by Taking a Photo

screenshot of paypal appA new update to the PayPal iPhone app now allows users to deposit money into their online accounts simply by taking a photo of a check. The new check-capture feature was first unveiled at TechCrunch Disrupt, and made its iTunes Store debut yesterday as a free update for the PayPal app. With the update, users will be able to deposit a check by using their iPhone to take photos of its front and back.

The Chase Bank iPhone app, of course, has offered the same feature for a few months now, and the 'Square' app has cut out the need for a check, altogether. 'Square,' however, requires users to buy some extra hardware, while PayPal users need only their iPhone camera to deposit their dough. Either way, it looks like plenty of smartphone users won't have to wait in line at the bank ever again.
