Fujitsu Teddy Robot Shows Off Enhanced Ursine Terror
Fujitsu's interactive robotic teddy bear arrived last spring, but our friends over at Engadget just recently got a one-on-one demonstration of the bear-bot's personalized and reactive behavior, capturing its animatronic antics on video. (Check it out after the break.) The somewhat terrifying bear, designed for children and the elderly as a "people-friendly terminal," originally inspired doubts as to its "soothing" capabilities, and the video does little to dissuade those fears. The robo-bear definitely interacts with the human interviewer, waving and giggling in response to various actions. The giggling, however, more closely resembles the insane cackling of a deranged witch. Fujitsu's bear department should probably consider equipping the little guy with beer-sniffing capabilities, so it might seem more alluring. For now, though, it's still pretty creepy. If the teddy engineers can't elevate the deficient cuteness factor, they're only dooming the poor little bot to a pathetic, lonely and depressing existence that too many forgotten robo-bears have already suffered.
