'The Social Network' Tops the Box Office, Falls Short of $25 Million

In the wake of the film's effusive critical reception, many analysts had projected 'The Social Network' to earn at least $25 million during its maiden weekend. Although the film fell short of those lofty expectations, executives at Sony insist that $23 million is still an impressive showing for a fall movie without a marquee lead actor. "We had great reviews, great opening, it worked on all fronts, and we think it's going to be around for a long, long time," Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer tells USA Today.
The film's revenue, moreover, could actually grow over the course of the next few weeks, since the autumnal movie-going audience typically consists of older consumers who generally prefer to skip opening weekends. Of course, even if Fincher's early box office returns are less than gargantuan, it probably won't stop plenty of Academy voters from clicking the 'Like' button come Oscar season.
