My husband the computer nerd popped out a well insulated board, the four corners keep it raised while air can still circulate in between.
My laptop actually overheated and would get hot when it was directly on my lap and I often had lag or slow load times because of it.

I bought a laptop cooler from Wal-Mart that is a Swiss Gear because a friend recommended it. Plus, I figured it was a Swiss Gear and that is a good name. I must have gotten a bad one out of the bunch, because I had it about 2 weeks and the fan started making like a grinding noise. My son said to take it back, but I wasn't making a special trip to the city to take it back. And I didn't remember to take it back when I would go unexpectedly. It would have cost about $20.00 in gas to take it back. The cooler already cost $45.00. I've had it since late February, and I've had to tape the cord into the back of the cooler so it gets a connection so it will work for about 6 months. So, for $45.00, it worked properly for a week. How much would you charge somebody to make a cooler like you made for yourself? Let me know if that is an idea you would like to do.
