They can assist in a person not getting burnt as well, in addition to those suggestions from the author. [The best option to prevent your laptop from toasting your skin is stupidly simple: put it on a desk. My laptop pulls air from below (back-left) and exhausts out the back. I had a laptop pad, but it didn't allow enough airflow so I bought one of the coolpads. It was useless. None of the models had the cooling fan(s) in the position that would actually cool the hotspot so I made my own. I bought an inexpensive cookie cooling rack and attached 3 cooling fans where they were actually needed. Then I attached 2 cut dowels to the back to raise the cooling rack base to allow for fan clearance. The cooling rack allows cool air to circulate more evenly over the ENTIRE bottom instead of in a small area as the coolpads do. Also, to help your laptop fans function at their optimum I would recommend getting a repair manual for your laptop and learn how to take it apart so you can clean out the dustbunnies that accumulate in and around the fan/exhaust. This also made a huge difference in cooling. Since doing these 2 things my laptop rarely runs hot.

srajoski

Comments on Laptops Can Cause 'Toasted Skin Syndrome' If You're Not Careful

@Strawberry
Hi Strawberry,
I bought a laptop cooler from Wal-Mart that is a Swiss Gear because a friend recommended it. Plus, I figured it was a Swiss Gear and that is a good name. I must have gotten a bad one out of the bunch, because I had it about 2 weeks and the fan started making like a grinding noise. My son said to take it back, but I wasn't making a special trip to the city to take it back. And I didn't remember to take it back when I would go unexpectedly. It would have cost about $20.00 in gas to take it back. The cooler already cost $45.00. I've had it since late February, and I've had to tape the cord into the back of the cooler so it gets a connection so it will work for about 6 months. So, for $45.00, it worked properly for a week. How much would you charge somebody to make a cooler like you made for yourself? Let me know if that is an idea you would like to do. Whew, thought I was getting spider veins already. I guess it looks like little, broken blood vessels deep under the skin in someone with albinism. Off to the dermatologist with me!

Toastytoasty
