Evan Williams, the co-founder and CEO of
Twitter since 2008,
announced today in a blog post that he would be stepping aside, and that COO Dick Costolo would be taking the company's helm. Williams wrote in the announcement:
"Growing big is not success, in itself. Success to us means meeting our potential as a profitable company that can retain its culture and user focus while having a positive impact on the world... I am most satisfied while pushing product direction... This is why I have decided to ask our COO, Dick Costolo, to become Twitter's CEO. Starting today, I'll be completely focused on product strategy."
Costolo has had successful tenures as the product manager of Google ads, and was a co-founder and CEO of Feedburner before its acquisition by
Google. That being the case, his track record of profitability is well established. It's also important to note that Williams isn't going anywhere. With Costolo taking care of money issues,
@Ev is free to work on keeping Twitter innovative, and fending off the competition.
