Soundgarden Scores Fourth Platinum Album With 'Guitar Hero' Help

Soundgarden and Guitar Hero
Selling a platinum album may seem like small potatoes for a band like Soundgarden, whose hit 'Superunknown' went five times platinum following its release in 1994. But, in the era of iTunes and rampant piracy, even going gold is a serious accomplishment. With the release of its greatest hits album, 'Telephantasm,' Soundgarden has scored its fourth platinum-selling album, and this one on the first day of availability. No, there isn't some grunge revivalism you're missing out on. The band could, in fact, be accused of cheating to achieve these numbers. See, 'Telephantasm' went platinum thanks to its being bundled with 'Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.'

Even if the 1 million copies of 'Telephantasm' packed with the game never make it into the hands of consumers, the RIAA still counts them as sales. "These 1 million units, purchased by Activision, are non-returnable and represent official sales of the album," RIAA director Kate Harold said via a press release. Those who don't get the album bundled with the game can buy the $18 download of 'Telephantasm' as playable tracks for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
