Google Autocomplete Blacklist Marks 'Gay Men' and 'Cocaine' as Offensive

As you'd imagine, most of the words on Google's blacklist, as gathered by 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, are of an explicitly sexual nature, although the list also includes four-letter words, racial slurs, and potentially taboo phrases like 'cocaine,' 'white power,' 'lesbian' and 'gay men' (the latter only when followed by a space).
A few quick tests reveal that the system errs on the side of being strict, flagging certain words regardless of context. So, a search for Canadian indie-pop supergroup The New Pornographers leaves you with blank results, because of 'pornographers.' Similarly, the presence of 'teen' leaves Nirvana fans still looking when trying to search for 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' A couple more odd examples:
- "Pamela Anderson" (though "Pam Anderson" works)
- "bisexual"
- "[insert anything] is evil"
- "women rapping"
- "hairy"
- "babes in toyland"
- "white power"
- "i hate"
- "fuchsia"
And, as thorough as Google's filter is, BoingBoing discovered several questionable words that are noticeably absent from the blacklist. Ultimately, however, the acceptability of many queries depends on how users space their words. There are a number of reasons you may not be seeing search queries for a particular topic. Among other things, we apply a narrow set of removal policies for pornography, violence, and hate speech. It's important to note that removing queries from Autocomplete is a hard problem, and not as simple as blacklisting particular terms and phrases.

Well, professors and other teachers will be happy because kids won't be able to google for their papers anymore if they are doing papers on "Breast Cancer", "Gay Men ", "Cocaine", or any of these terms. That's why the American Library Association is against any form of censorship.
thomas.houstonSep 29th 2010 9:05PM
they'll be able to search for those terms, results just won't instantly appear when searching with Google Instant.
BrendanSep 29th 2010 10:07PM
@(Unverified) Did you read the article? It isn't banishing google from FINDING those things, it just doesnt suggest them on autocomplete......

So I guess we don't need to live in China to have our searches censored.Who is it that decides the criteria for this censorship.Since white power is forbidden can I get a result with "black power".I have always thought google is a little too big brother like and avoid their search engine. On AOL's main page in the top news section I recently noticed they added the term "hot search" followed by a topic.Pressing on this utilizes a google search. After realizing this I have never used it since.Try ixquick or startpage as a search engine to avoid these clowns.

@(Unverified) After reading your reply, I was a little curious, so I tried typing in white power to see what happened, and of course, it all went blank like it said. I then tried black power and it worked just fine. Went right through. Unbelievable. So much for equality. I wouldn't care if they either both went blank or both worked, as long as they did the same for BOTH!

i was wondering if they would do this

xjimenezxarianaxOct 14th 2010 8:40PM
@(Unverified) umm and do you remember how to spell remember because apparently you don't.

LitaSep 30th 2010 2:04AM
... and this has to do with ... what? I remember when crack meant something had a flaw in it. Duh.
Tim MartinSep 30th 2010 2:05AM
@(Unverified) Yes, I remember when "gay" meant "happy." But since I'm gay I'm even "happier."
ladymultiOct 1st 2010 2:15PM
@(Unverified) Yeah, and I'm only 27, haha. Watch the old Disney short animations and they use the word gay and queer in them. Using their original meanings, of course.

So sorry for incorrect spelling but scenzorshypp zuggccz!
aaasutton139Sep 29th 2010 9:11PM
Better safe then sorry... I would rather my child type in something and be safe from seeing or reading things that they should not be reading/seeing. There is already enough porn, profanity, nudity and violence that is uncontrolled on t.v, videos, games movies, music and the like... I cant stop them from hearing it but I can limit it

@(Unverified) Well before auto-complete the only way you could stumble across something is by typing it and hitting enter, this new feature doesn't really change anything.
undrgrndgirlSep 30th 2010 12:38AM
@(Unverified)...then you better get rid of your dictionaries...or maybe you don't have one...sigh...
undrgrndgirlSep 30th 2010 12:44AM
@(Unverified) guess you don't own any dictionaries, do you?
KHSep 29th 2010 9:19PM
You can turn off auto complete. I did ages ago -- it's annoying
PaulaSep 29th 2010 9:21PM
Well praise be to the Lord above for this feature! I'm so damn tired of hitting "enter" or clicking "search" when browsing the web. It's too damn much work.
Seriously though, why is the human race still inventing and "improving" things? Aside from medical technology, I think we have all the bases covered. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
ambjan90Sep 30th 2010 12:56AM
@(Unverified) THANK YOU... why are we complaining about a feature on a website that helps us decide how to spell something correctly, cause come on everyone you know most of the time that's the reason why you use that, or just helps us what to search for... because we as human beings can't think for ourselves anymore??? come on now
