'Dark Cut 2': A Brutal Civil War Surgery Simulator, Whiskey Included

Dark Cut 2
Let's face it. Most Flash and indie games are painfully easy. But just because a game is made for a browser doesn't mean that it has to hold your hand. There's something satisfying about surviving a bone-crushingly hard game by the skin of your teeth. Once, with games like 'Contra,' this sense of accomplishment came from memorizing enemy patterns and level layouts without resorting to the Konami code. [Ed. note: Was that even possible?] Today, it's about using brainpower to forge through games in innovative ways, using speed, precision and trickery, while, of course, having fun. Not all of these games will make you break a sweat, but they will force you to adapt to new mechanics. Nothing easy is ever worthwhile, right?

'Dark Cut 2' is as brutally unrelenting as its subject matter. Gamers take the role of a Civil War field surgeon, using all the (archaic) tools of the era to try and overcome myriad injuries, from bullet wounds to shrapnel. Using the mouse, players must anesthetize their patients with whiskey (the more, the better), clean wounds with dirty rags, and use other methods that make us incredibly grateful we live in an age of penicillin and painkillers. Just as true to the era as are the game's surgical methods, the time limit is insanely short. (Again, more whiskey!) Linger too long on the operating table, and patients will end up six feet under. Also, if pus makes you squirm, this may not be the sim for you.
