Yahoo! Updates Mail, Adds Twitter and Facebook Integration

Yahoo! Mail Beta
Google might consistently have the most innovative and interesting webmail product on the market, but services like Yahoo! and Hotmail have held on strong, if for no other reason than changing your e-mail address is a pain in the behind region. But those services can't afford to continue losing ground to Gmail if they hope to remain relevant. Yahoo! has decided to stop resting on its laurels, and, over the next few weeks, will begin rolling out a significant upgrade to its e-mail service. Most immediately apparent will be the shiny new coat of digital paint Yahoo! Mail receives. Yahoo! claims the redesign will make navigation simpler and cleaner, and will put the advanced features in easier reach. The company also claims the new Mail Beta will be significantly faster than the current iteration.

More interesting, though, will be the various non-e-mail features being added and enhanced. Users will now be able to view and update their Facebook and Twitter accounts from Yahoo! Mail. The built-in Yahoo! Messenger is also being updated, as are the media-sharing tools and text-messaging interface. Even the inbox search is receiving a a spit-polish. We'll have to wait and see how the new Yahoo! Mail stacks up against Gmail and the latest version of Hotmail. The Twitter integration sounds nice, but, with the integration of Google Voice, Gmail is going to be tough to beat.
