Twitter Announces New Website Design, Embedded Pictures and Video

Clicking on a tweet that contains a picture link will load the picture within the Twitter experience, saving you from having to jump to an additional page. Similarly, clicking tweets that mention a video or a person will load playable video or a profile pane, respectively. You'll also see that much of the navigation features (searches, lists, @replies) has been moved to the top of the site. Again, like the iPad app, you'll be able to scroll endlessly through tweets, digging deep into conversations. Twitter is also adding keyboard shortcuts to help you move around within the site. Video services like YouTube, Vimeo and Ustream will be supported, and Williams announced that all major Twitter picture-hosting services are supported, too. A small group of users will be able to access the new design today, and the site will launch worldwide soon. Check out the preview video after the break, and find out more at Twitter.

What I find most interesting about today's announcement is that Twitter is clearly trying to create a more enticing consumption environment, and in order to do so, they have followed the lead of Apple's Ping and Google Instant by offering new features that promote discovery. This is clearly a trend we should all continue to follow closely.
