Chattanooga: See Rock City! Visit Ruby Falls! Surf U.S.'s Fastest Web?

chattanooga choo-choo
The pretty little city in the Mountain South known to many simply as Nooga may soon be recognized as the home of the country's fastest Internet service. Chattanooga, Tennessee's city-owned cable and power provider, EPB, plans to have implemented 1Gbps Web service across the city by the end of 2010. Doing so would make Chattanooga the first U.S. city to offer such blazing speeds.

Of course, offering and giving are not one and the same. That premium tier of service would cost subscribers $350 a month, certainly prohibitive for most individuals. Still, businesses, particularly those involved in the tech industry, could very well see the service as an attractive reason to set up shop in Chattanooga, which has been known through the South for its strident economic development efforts. When asked by the New York Times why his company had decided to pursue such a high-speed service, chief executive Harold DePriest said: "The simple answer is because we can."
