OnStar Bringing Facebook, Text Message Updates to Cars
Looking to compete with Ford's Sync's messaging technology, GM's OnStar may soon add text messaging and Facebook updates to its on-board communication system. According to The Detroit Free Press, a source claims that OnStar subscribers will be able to transmit text messages and Facebook updates via the on-board communications system by the end of the month. Before you safety advocates go berserk, the system will feature text-to-speech translation for incoming messages and updates, and voice-to-text translation for outgoing communications is currently being tested. Since Ford first announced Sync's built-in Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities, we've been waiting for other manufacturers to roll out hands-free communication systems, and OnStar's social-networking push may finally bring much-needed competition to the auto market.
