The Big Picture App Puts the iPad's Big Screen to Good Use

The Big Picture on iPadBoston.com's The Big Picture is one of, if not the, best photojournalism blogs on the Web. A few times per week, the site publishes a collection of images relating to a specific news event or topic, and, with the aid of the official iPhone app, you could have those stunning photos delivered straight to your mobile device. But the iPhone's cramped 3.5-inch screen is hardly the ideal venue for viewing content of this quality. Thankfully the latest update adds iPad support. The iPad's comparatively expansive 9.7-inch screen offers more detail and makes the nuances of the images much easier to discern. Reuters and the Guardian beat The Big Picture to the punch in releasing dedicated photojournalism apps for the iPad, but the Boston.com property makes up for its lateness (and less frequent updates) with pure loveliness. The Big Picture app is available for $2.99 from the App Store, but here's a word of warning: it's recommended that you use it over Wi-Fi. The app doesn't pre-fetch the next image in a gallery, and that can make for a frustrating experience over 3G.
