In case you
missed Apple's announcement today, Steve Jobs unveiled a new series of iPods, iTunes 10, a smaller Apple TV and an update to the mobile iOS software. Head after the break for a quick breakdown of everything you need to know.
iOS 4.1, and 4.2
Jobs announced the update to the
iPhone/iPod operating system iOS 4.1, including new features like HDR photos, HD video uploads over WiFi, and GameCenter. iOS 4.2 also got teased, and multitasking, folders and more will finally come to iPad users as a free update in November.
New iPod Designs
Although the iPod touch got the most expected updates, which include all of the tech in the iPhone 4 (e.g., the A4 chip and front-facing camera), the
iPod Nano got the most drastic makeover. Now a square multi-touch screen, the Nano is nearly the size of the Shuffle -- which has been refitted with buttons!
iTunes 10
Apple has finally decided to update the iTunes logo for Version 10, and has also
introduced a new music-based social networking feature called Ping. Jobs described Ping as "Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes," allowing users to follow friends and even artists in order to see what they're listening to or downloading through iTunes.
Apple TV
Even though we heard it was going to get renamed as 'iTV,'
the Apple TV is keeping its original moniker but getting outfitted -- finally -- with Netflix streaming. It will also boast HD TV show rentals at $.99 each from major networks and AirPlay (an updated version of AirTunes), the latter of which will allow you to stream content wirelessly to and from your family of Apple devices. All this resides inside of a sleek and smaller new box.
