Apple TV Gets Tiny, Gets Netflix, Gets Useful

The new Apple TV will be able to pump out HD video, although there's no word on whether it'll handle 1080p or be limited to 720p. It sports a completely new look, one that is slightly less reminiscent of the Mac Mini. It's seriously small (tiny enough for Steve to fit in the palm of his hand) and matte black. Around back are the expected HDMI and power connectors, as well as an Ethernet port. But, for those without a long enough cable, Apple has included Wi-Fi N, so you can streaming your HD content.
Another compromise inherent in the tiny size is a lack of on-board storage, but with the focus exclusively on streaming content, that's not a huge issue. Instead of purchasing shows and movies, you rent them from iTunes. HD shows got a deep price cut to $0.99, although only ABC and FOX are on board at present. Newly released films will be available in HD for only $4.99, but the really exciting part (or worrisome part, if you're Roku) is that the Apple TV will now stream videos from Netflix.
At only $99, the Apple TV might prove a compelling upgrade for current owners, and the low price could attract customers who already purchase a lot of videos from iTunes. But those who were hoping that Apple would finally unveil a truly home theater-friendly computer will just have to keep waiting.
Update: Engadget reports that 720p streaming video only has been confirmed.

Being a new owner of a Roku box I see the New Apple TV as an ok unit but it does not offer the same level of features. As much as Steve Jobs wants to believe the HD change over has been done, I have only 1 out of three tvs in my house that is HD and it is not my main TV so the limited ports was a bit of a turn off for me. My Roku HD can go on any TV in my house for the same price of $99.00. I do not use Netflix but it is there what I do use is Amazon Unbox which right now has a lot more to offer then the Apple TV. And Steve's claim that no one wants to own Movies or shows again I think he missed the target, I do enjoy watching some movies several times in fact I think I have watched the new Star Trek at least 4 times and at $4.99 a viewing that would have been more costly then the $9.99 I paid to own it. Oh as far as manageing storage goes Amazon handles that for me all my movies are stored there and you can still download them to a PC for viewing or streaming by media center. All in all Apple TV will apeal to some but the combination of Roku, Net Flix, Amazon Unbox is very hard to beat.
