While
FIFA will probably never embrace technology in the World Cup, some sporting events are warming up to its potential benefits. According to the BBC News, athletes competing in the pentathlon at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London
will shoot laser guns rather than the traditional air pistols used in past games. The switch reduces cost, for one, since laser guns won't use ammunition or air cartridges when fired. It will also make the sport safer, and, in turn, open it up to new venues, both indoors and out. The laser gun technology debuted in June at the World Cup pentathlon final in Moscow. After another successful trial at the inaugural Youth Olympics, Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) president Klaus Schormann gave the technology the green light for the 2012 games in England.
With the Olympics embracing the 'pew pew'-nature of lasers, more outdated sporting events (ahem, World Cup) won't be able to ignore how technology is making the pentathlon both safer and cheaper.

Just another Nanny State compromise to pander to the gunophobic Brits. I'm not buying that laser pistols are cheaper to acquire and operate than air pistols. Just think of all those nasty, expensive batteries or, god forbid, those 200' long extension cords, Look at the stats. A great many more competitors are injured running than in competitive shooting and that includes REAL guns. Have you ever heard of a competitor injured at a shooting event? No you havent because it NEVER happens.

@Night Driver Yea, I think several were hit with a javelin and a discus. Hey how bout Laser Archery. No wind or skill needed to keep sight on target. This is stupid.

Well said Night Driver. Once knew a woman, perhaps the most rabid anti-gun zealot I'd ever met. She was also a past National-something Collegiate Fencing Champion. She had no problems with competition swordplay or archery, "That's different", she said. Never made any sense to me, and could never get her to even acknowledge the conflict in logic.

PS Have trained on simulators with "Laser-Glocks". Useful, but not the same.

will these laser guns have any recoil? here's a thought, why not run the whole event in a simulator? why not use nintendo wii? that way everyone can stay in their dorms during the event and finish the event without ever having to get dressed. then they can just email their scores to the IOC. what a joke!!!

I agree! Recoil is a HUGE part of competitive shooting. Aside from overcoming the instinctive fear of noise/flash/pain, the ablity to recover and put the SECOND round in the target is crucial.

.177 air pistols have almost no discernible recoil.
I did hear we lost our firearms pistol team a few years ago when the UK banned all handguns. Handguns used to be allowed at ranges, as long as they were stored there, but after some nutter went on the rampage, they were all outlawed.
Image, losing your Olympic team because they couldn't train any more. Lunacy.
Oh, and gun crime is on the increase.

Yea, use the Wii, then think of all the "Carbon" footprints not left. Everyone could stay in thier on countries. Would not have to build useless sites to hold the games.
