Smart Garbage Cans Fine You When You Don't Recycle
Warning to our Cleveland Switched readers: be extra vigilant about separating your recyclables. A new program being launched in the Ohio city will distribute 25,000 RFID-equipped recycling bins to residents. The tagged cans will be used to track how often a household takes its recycling to the curb. Fail to toss the recycling often enough, and you'll trigger a garbage audit. Your trash will be separated from your neighbors', and, if your rubbish is more than 10-percent recyclables, you'll be issued a fine of $100. Several cities in Europe have used similar bins to track cumulative trash production, fining households that waste too much. Meanwhile, the D.C. suburb of Alexandria, Virginia has announced that it, too, will be launching its own recycle-tracking program. While Big Brother in a garbage bin will make the privacy-conscious squirm, if this initiative nets the city money (either through fines or the fiscal advantages of recycling), plenty of cities will be sure to follow Cleveland's lead.

NOW FOR EVERYONE TO RECYCLE IT TAKES TIME AND WORK FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL TO DO THIS. IF COMPANYS WERE FINED FOR HAVING THINGS SOLD IN PLASTIC OR GLASS WHERE CARDBOARD COULD JUST AS EASILY HAVE BEEN USED YOU WOULDNT HAVE THE PLASTIC OR THE GLASS TO RECYCLE. CARDBOARD ROTS AND FAST. ANOTHER THING INSTEAD OF ALL OF AMERICA DOING THE TRASH FOLKS WORK FOR THEM DO THE RECYCLING AT THE DANGED DUMP WHERE IT SHOULD BE DONE. THIS WOULD TAKE LESS EFFORT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE A HELL OF A LOT BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN TO SEPERATE THERE TRASH.

Every year or two, our township changes trash service to try to get the best financial deal. The problem with this is that evry refuse company has different rules. The current trash company practically wants us to gift-wrap the garbage in spite of the fact that I pay almost $8000 yearly in property taxes. There should be two pails-one for household garbage and one for recycling period. It should be up to teh trash company to separate the recycling material, not the household. Also if certain containers are required, they should be funished free-of-charge by the township or the trash company. No wonder many people give up with recycling. If you make it ahuge job, people just give up.
