Teacher Fired After Criticizing Colleagues, Parents on Facebook, We Say 'Duh'
Here's a great way to get yourself fired: logging onto Facebook, and letting the world know how much you hate your job -- and the people you work for -- especially if you work with kids. That's exactly what Dr. June Talvitie-Siple did, and it totally worked. Dr. Talvitie-Siple, supervisor of the math and science program at Massachusetts's Cohasset High School, recently used the social networking site to air her grievances about her job and her community. "Residents are so arrogant and snobby," she wrote in one post. In another, she emoted, "So not looking forward to another year at Cohasset schools." As she told NBC's WHDH affiliate, she had no idea that her rants were visible for the whole world to see. "I thought I had my privacy settings set so that I was only talking to my friends," she said. "And it turns out I wasn't." Once word of her public criticism got around, Talvitie-Staple got her wish, and lost her job. Mission accomplished. [From: NBCBayArea and MSNBC]
Update: According to WCVBTV Boston and AOL News, Dr. June Talvitie-Siple was asked by school Superintendent Denise Walsh to resign.

You can't convince these morons that everything they post is on the WORLD WIDE WEB (that's why they call it that). So many people post so many details of their lives for all to see. It really makes the work of detectives, creditors, and stalkers so much easier! Why this need to make public all ones thoughts and movements?

What happened to calling your best friend and having a good old fashioned bitch session. Or, if this PH.D. is so unhappy with her job, then get a new job. I do not want some disgruntled, unhappy teacher "training up" my child for a good future. And I used FaKeBook for a while until I got tired of hearing what my friends were eating for breakfast. Ancient Chinese Secret: Do not put anything (ANYTHING) in writing that could come back to bite ya on the booty. Peace!

I feel sorry for this lady losing her job. Although, I have to say what a stupid move on her part. In 2010, you don't post such personal remarks over the INTERNET for the world to see- I don't care what security settings you have. It's not smart to do that period! A few years ago, I made such a mistake once at work- I'm lucky it did not cost me my job. But, I've since learned my lesson and will never, ever do something that stupid again.
She is probably right about her boss and the people she works with.

Why can't people see what a problem Facebook is? It's not bad enough that people have addictions to electronic gadgetry but come-on. Facebook is friggin Orwellian.
Yet the herd flocks to it in droves. They deserve what they get.

It's sad to say you can't say anything of your opinion without backlash. It's almost a crime to disagree with something you are not polictical correct.

Hey, I'm from Cohasset, and I'm not a huge fan of the town. But this woman was a bad teacher according to most of her students. They asked her to resign, they didn't fire her.
And oh, yeah, if you know Cohasset as well as you claim to then why don't you know that it is only spelt with one T and not two? It isn't Cohassett. It isn't even spelled like that in the article, so I'm seriously wondering if you read it or just came here so you could complain about how we're the barons of the world and just step on anyone who is beneath us.
As someone who left Cohasset High School after my freshman year and would agree with every thing that June Talvitie-Siple said about the residents, I'm offended that you, someone who is clearly not a resident of Cohasset (although you say you're from Massachusetts) would feel the need to say things like that about my hometown.

If your argument is to be believed, then what pray tell did the students do to warrant her postings regarding them, other than being teenagers in high school? And perhaps you could elucidate on the rationale of her posting comments regarding the parents of students at the school as well.

I have little sympathy for this woman! I don't care HOW MANY controls an internet site has: one does NOT 'vent' on the Internet about anything they do not want others to see, read, or hear! I would think common sense would tell one that ... especially an academic! "Duh" is precisely the correct word here!

The old saw that "don't put anything in an email that you wouldn't want your boss/coworkers/subordinates to see" is true with Facebook. Personally, I have no use for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, or any other social networking site. There's another old saying: Fools' names and fools' faces can be found in public places.

I live in Massachusetts, and my family and I have been to Cohasset several times.. This town is probably the WORST when it comes to snobby people!! There are snobby store owners, snobby tourists, snobby natives, etc, etc.. If you've never been to Cohasset, you really can't comment on if the people there are snobby or not... Just go there and it will blow you away!

Why is the 1st amendment even brought up? The issue isn't about government censorship. "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech". Where is the government making a law here?
Did the district firing (or asking for a resignation) trample on her "rights"? No more than not allowing the district to fire her (or ask for a resignation) would trample on their "rights". Why is her "rights" more important than the "rights" of the district? What is the basis for your bias attitude?
