I was sick for 13 years, doctors just gave one excuse after another, blaming one symptom on another. Turns out after reading an article in a magazine and doing a lot of research, I found out that I had a tributary tumor, Cushings Syndrome. I lost 13 years of my life, the doctors had done the tests, had the results that should have led them to my illness (I had to insist that they test me, and then once they had those test results had to prove to them they were correct). We need to b e proactive and educated in our health care, we need to be active partisapants who ask questions and do not just shake our heads when we do not understand or agree. The internet is a good place to start, to get information as long as we are careful to filter out "opinion" sites from "factual" medical sites that are relyable (Such as Mayo Clinic or other such sites)
