I needed surgery on both eyes and really dreaded it. But once I read about it and how it was done and watched YouTube videos of the surgery, about 90% of my fear and dread went away. I had the surgery done and couldn't be happier about it--20/20 vision! Of course doctors don't want you to 'self-diagnose' an illness. Because if it was something you can treat with an OTC medicine, they miss out on an office visit. However, when someone does have symptoms, and they're not sure what they could mean, it doesn't hurt to look up what potential problems you could be facing. And when I had all the indications that I might've had thyroid problems? I looked it up after reading an article about it, and went to my doctor. When I told her that I suspected I might have thyroid disease, would she please check it for me, she gave me a speech about 'self-diagnosis' and how bad it is for me. Right. As it happened, I didn't have thyroid disease, the symptoms were side-effects from meds that I take, all precisely mirroring the symptoms of thyroid disease, and frankly, I was a bit perturbed about her attitude. It's called peace of mind. I asked her to rule it out, and she did. Was that too hard? Makes you wonder what makes these doctors think they can NEVER be questioned or make a suggestion to them. They're NOT perfect!

jivenjingle

Comments on Americans Increasingly Becoming 'Cyberchondriacs,' Study Finds

I also look up many things when firends tell me they have something so that I understand what they are going through or can cook a meal for them without killing them!

Vandreyer

Comments on Americans Increasingly Becoming 'Cyberchondriacs,' Study Finds

Do doctors want us to throw away our Encyclopedias and PDR's also?? Considering many symptoms can be signs of many illnesses the internet cannot be a diagnostic tool. You must also consider that a lot of medical information you find is very general and typical. Other stuff is just plain B.S. Sometimes we only find what we want to find or what we most fear. We can have a cold but fear we have cancer and "match" all those symptoms. The internet can be a great support group once you've been diagnosed but you even have to be careful with that. There are a lot of "miracle" drugs" for cancer and diabetes and stuff. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
The internet is a reference, not a diagnosis.

Carol

Comments on Americans Increasingly Becoming 'Cyberchondriacs,' Study Finds

I use it as a tool only. One to understand what may be happening to someone close to me, or to more understand what my Dr. has told me. Another is to check out some symptoms and then ask my Dr. Like any tool they are never the end all or be all, but something to help you. I think this article is about those who might hear someone talking about a illness then they have it. The internet makes it easier for them to find more a lot quicker.

Virgil

Comments on Americans Increasingly Becoming 'Cyberchondriacs,' Study Finds

If I wouldn't have questioned a dr. my husband would be dead right now. Yes, one needs to be proactive in their health, but one must also allow their medical provider to be able to also make suggestions. I've had a few patients who felt that they had certain diseases, when in fact there was no evidence to support this. One patient was so demanding that we run tests, which we did, that when every thing was negative they refused to accept that. One patient was so sure that they had this one disease they went to 5 other doctors in town. Of course they refused to believe that they didn't have this problem, even when it was pointed out to them that only people with severe mental retardation can only get this disease. Three of the doctors they saw suggested that they see a psycologist. The internet is a good tool, but like most tools; one needs to know how to use them. I use the internet myself, but I also respect the opinion of my medical provider. Just because there is a website for medical advice, it doesn't necessarily mean it's correct, I've found most to be very vague.

jany

Comments on Americans Increasingly Becoming 'Cyberchondriacs,' Study Finds

You take your patient's self diagnosis with a grain of salt? How very pompous of you. On the flip side, I take my doctor's advice with a grain of salt. It took 7 years of testing and telling me there was nothing wrong with me and that it was all in my head to finally discover that I had Lyme disease. Lab tests are not always accurate. However, here's another fact: Doctors are not the diagnostians they used to be. Assumptions are made based on your gender and your age; these assumptions often prove to be groundless. Batteries of tests are ordered accordingly and tests are expensive. When my husband became ill, we had to suffer through a wrong diagnosis and a procedure that should never have been performed before he was diagnosed correctly (finally) with Stage IV Follicular non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. You can BET I researched and learned everything possible about that disease. And I added my voice to the internet with 3 articles on Declaring War on non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma detailing our journey from stage 4 of that cancer to remission.

What the medical community as a whole needs to understand is that the most important person in that examining room is the patient. A great doctor will PARTNER with that patient to combat the disease. We had a great oncologist who understands and practices this. That patient also has to understand everything that's going on as well. So, yeah, I use the internet to research conditions and diseases when I or one of my loved ones falls ill. And, it has always proved beneficial in consultations.

'nuf said.

AriM

Comments on Americans Increasingly Becoming 'Cyberchondriacs,' Study Finds

I use the web because my doctor will tell tell me what is wrong, but won't take the time to explain it. Got to take care of the overcrowded waiting room. But if you go to webmd.com and type in some sort of symptom you have before you go to the doctor, you can get some scary results. Turns out after reading an article in a magazine and doing a lot of research, I found out that I had a tributary tumor, Cushings Syndrome. I lost 13 years of my life, the doctors had done the tests, had the results that should have led them to my illness (I had to insist that they test me, and then once they had those test results had to prove to them they were correct). We need to b e proactive and educated in our health care, we need to be active partisapants who ask questions and do not just shake our heads when we do not understand or agree. The internet is a good place to start, to get information as long as we are careful to filter out "opinion" sites from "factual" medical sites that are relyable (Such as Mayo Clinic or other such sites)

weneedhelp
