Reuters Canada reports that the NFL has spoken with a German manufacturer about
placing microchips inside footballs in order to prevent blown calls by officials. The tight-lipped NFL, naturally, would not confirm or deny these reports, but Cairos Technologies sales director Mario Hanus told Reuters, "Yes, we are talking. There is a demand in American Football." The demand is getting touchdown, first-down, out-of-bounds and other calls correct without depending on human officials or instant replay. If microchip technology is implemented, an alarm would sound to let refs know when the ball crossed the goal line or other lines on the field -- rather than officials merely eyeballing it. A marriage between the NFL and microchip technology has been rumored for some time, so we're hesitant to believe (for now anyway) that this latest news means our refs will go robo anytime soon. It doesn't matter to these angry blow hards. All they care about is sounding mean and self important. Ignore it.

Ok, the ball crosses the line and the microchip sets of the signal. What if a knee is down prior to the ball crossing the line? Should the NFL plant microchips in the players knees as well?

And what about passes into the endzone...does the alarm sound every time the ball is thrown in there--whether caught or not? And this still doesn't eliminate human error on judgment calls when a player is juggling the ball perhaps before going out of bounds. You still have to decide if the player controlled the ball or not. Personally, I think it kinda sounds like a waste of resources to me.

Bill and dmitchell4138, I'm inclined to agree with both of you, you have both shown what is wrong with the microchip idea. It would appear that the NFL has not (yet) thought this through. Hopefully, they will sit down and address the issues you have brought up.

Do they have to?
cqdeedAug 5th 2010 9:05PM
They are just trying to mute the mass of abuse heaped upon them at every call.

Dry up, gas bag.

This won't completely solve the problems people have with blown calls, though. They'll still complain about possession calls, as well. Did he fumble? Did he have the catch? Did he have a foot out of bounds? You name it. It may be helpful to do this in the NFL, but we're kidding ourselves if we think it will ever really cut down significantly on bad calls overall. I don't know what the perfect solution is, but this is at least a step in the right direction.

I'd just like to know what part of the ball they will put this device in. Will it be the middle, the front tip, or the back tip of the football. Wouldn't that make a BIG difference? We football fans have all seen that "first down" measurement where just the "nose" of the ball is past the yard marker but the rest of the ball is well behind. So if we go the electronic GPS route where is the sensor going to be? Hey, maybe it will be the WHOLE ball. Now that would work just fine.

inmidtowneAug 5th 2010 9:59PM
Rusty, the reason you keep getting victimized by these scumbags is because of your attitude. Youu attract that which you fear and hate in order to overcome it. Try love and maybe you won't be victimized as much. God loves all equally. Try that.
inmidtowneAug 5th 2010 10:04PM
Rusty, if you're such a tough guy, you must have a double digit I.Q. for sure for you to be victimized twice. Not too bright, are you?
ThruHiker52Aug 5th 2010 10:15PM
Another troglodyte and his hatred for anyone or anything that doesn't follow his doctrine of life. Rusty, shouldn't you be at a klan meeting? One more thing...it's a discussion about FOOTBALL!

Microchip? Wow! You mean use modern technology, what a concept. Now if they would only use instant replay to it's fullest extent. Since when does a blown call make the game better because of the human factor? The only ones that like the blown call are the team, their fans and anyone that bet on them. Now if they could just start playing football again instead of making so many rules nobody can hit anymore. Cure? Make a maximum weight for the players. Nobody needs to weigh more than 275 at the most. This would reduce injuries, players would be in better shape and be able to play longer. Maybe use skill instead of just weighing more.
