Aussie Family Stranded Three Days After Following GPS Into Outback

How far will travelers blindly follow a GPS device? According to The Sydney Morning Herald, an Australian family of four (and their poor pup) followed directions given by their GPS onto a road closed by heavy rainfall and became stranded for three nights in a pickup truck. The family, believe it or not, ignored posted warning signs and turned onto the Darling River Road while traveling between Brisbane and Perth in the northwest part of the continent. The truck promptly became bogged down in the thick mud, leaving the family stuck in the middle of the Outback, far from civilization. They called police immediately, but since conditions were so poor, it took authorities three nights to finally reach the foolish travelers on Sunday. Ignoring a closed city street sign is one thing, but driving right past a warning sign in the middle of Australia's wilderness just because your GPS device tells you to is another thing all together. lets get something straight.when you use a gps,you still need to use common sense.gps is so much better then a road map but however it does the exact same job.the good thing about a gps is that if you happen to get lost and you are not using it,all you have to do is type in where you want to go and it will tell you.you dont even have to know the street you are on.i use only because its a fun little toy and plus my g/f does some of the driving.guys have a very good sense of direction.but a gps and a road map have one thing in common.neither one will tell you if a road is closed.you have to use common sense.if a road is closed do to a flood, const,or whatever it is,you need to take a different route

A while ago, I took a road trip halfway across the country. It took three days to go about 1,500 miles and there is no gps in my vehicle. When necessary, I went where the road side ads said to.

When necessary, I went where the road side ads said to. On the way back from Texas, I did the same thing. There is no reason for anyone to have a GPS in their vehicle. The devices are just a theft magnet.

I was told by a salesperson at Best Buy that GPS equipment are not always updated therefore you may be told to go one way and that road may be closed. Some acquaintances almost got killed in Ireland following their GPS instructions. They were driving at night when the GPS told them to make a left unto a dirt road. They got suspicious after a while, stopped the car and walked to check it out. About a few hundred yards away was a cliff!!!!! Needless to say they turned back!

gps devices are not useless when compared to paper maps, mainly because they usually have actual maps you can browse around too. so they could've used it to map a different route. when you only have printed out driving instructions and they go to a closed route, then you're screwed.
