Officials in one Long Island town are cracking down on rogue swimming pool owners by using Google's satellite imaging technology. According to an Associated Press report in The Wall Street Journal, Riverhead, New York's chief building inspector, LeRoy Barnes, Jr., is
using Google Earth to locate swimming pools that haven't been registered for a city permit. So far, Barnes and his staff have discovered about 250 pools to be missing permits, and have collected about $75,000 in fines. The city claims that this rash of unregulated pools could have faulty plumbing or electrical work, which would endanger Riverhead residents.
Lillie Coney, associate director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington, D.C. told the AP, "The technology is going so far ahead of what people think is possible, and there is too little discussion about community norms." The decision to use Google Earth probably didn't stem from safety or privacy; the city used a free service to do a faster, more efficient (and invasive) job. It makes perfect fiscal sense, even if it might ruffle some feathers. [From:

Been doing that here for years. Used arial photography prior to Google Earth. They find skylights , out buildings , tree removals (yes, permit required) and gazebos all without permits issued.

How ironic. This is essentially a double barreled tax that typically leaves owners vulnerable, due to state licensing board allowance for non-licensed (illegal) contractors to easily perform work with out permits, and then use "due delligenace" agaisnt you to warrant fines against you. Sounds like their government is scrapping for pennies, so good luck with that and your re-election(s). How about you better monitor in process construction at inception and not penalizing homeowners for entrusting faith into a system they have no knoweledge over. Really, the officals coments about faulty wiring and plumpling being the concern, where junvenile drowning in pools are the number one casue for deaths associated with pool. After all, it is the building officals job to preseve the health, safety and welfare of the public, so their interests should be aligned with that. Matter of fact, if you a a normal person, not in construction, ask yourself when the last time you have seen one? The concern hear for the officals always is how to get the most money by upsetting the least amount of people.

This shouldn't surprise anyone, a local government finding addtional ways to rob people. Hell, its hard to even take a leak these days without someone watching. The word privacy may soon be removed from the dictionary, you never know.

The obvious reason is only partially safety. The BIG REASON IS RAISING PROPERTY TAXES!! And they will on those peiple!! You can't win any more!!
