Dell Tech Swipes Nude Photos of Gullible Customer
Dell is apparently eager to compete with Best Buy and Walmart for the title of most despised retailer in the country. A few months back, a tech support rep got in trouble for turning on a woman's webcam without her permission. Then, last month, the company got nabbed knowingly shipping faulty PCs. And, just this week, the Texas-based manufacturer was caught shipping motherboards infected with malware. Now, a woman from California is alleging that a support technician for Dell stole nude photos of her from her PC and posted them online, and then charged $800 worth of computer gear to her credit card for another woman in Tennessee. This is not a cut-and-dry case of a misbehaving tech rep, though. This drama has actually been going on for almost a year, and only now is Tara Fitzgerald coming forward with her accusations. Try and follow the sequence of events, and make sense of Fitzgerald's often questionable judgment.
One fateful day, our Sacramento-based victim was unsuccessfully searching her computer for some rather private photographs she'd taken for her boyfriend. Rather than ask her beau or a trusted friend for help, Fitzgerald called Dell tech support to locate the missing explicit images (mistake number one). The tech, Riyaz Shaikh, was given remote access to the PC by Fitzgerald, who then claims she watched as Shaikh copied the images for his own use. A few days later, those images showed up online, on a site completely dedicated to showing off Tara's goodies. At this point, rather than go to the authorities or Dell (mistake number two), Fitzgerald turned back to Shaikh for help. The support agent had increasingly personal contact with Tara, and eventually convinced her to send him the Dell laptop so that he could remove the photos from the comfort of his home (mistake number three).
But, hold on. This is where things take a turn for the truly bizarre. On Valentine's Day, Shaikh told Fitzgerald that he had fallen in love with another woman, who had also called tech support. The rep allegedly shipped this new woman $800 worth of Dell gear, bought with Fitzgerald's credit card. After complaining to Dell, Fitzgerald finally came forward with her charges. But rather than go to the police, the woman turned to the media (mistake number four).
Fitzgerald is thinking about filing suit against Dell, although the company says it is working with her to resolve the matter outside of court. Shaikh is no longer working the tech support lines at Dell, but it's unclear whether or not he will face any criminal charges in India. We can't shake the feeling that there is more to the story. Fitzgerald's naivete was largely the cause of her undoing, but it sounds as if her relationship with Shaikh had to do with something more than tech support. [From: ABC, via: Consumerist]

I don't recall all this when the Tech support was still in the US. Now that it's in India, seems all this garbage is going on.

And people wonder why I advocate trimming our gene pool.

dell's still around? I thought they went out of business. their computers are terrible. my friend got a new one every year, and I always wondered why he kept getting a dell. I've had my current HP for 7 years now.

My Dell desktop is still going strong after almost 8 yrs. So I can't fault their equipment. At least not their older stuff. But their tech support, even 7 yrs ago, sucked.

could people comment on the post and not the spelling or the grammer? i know u have phd's in english and all.... u just dont have to point it out.... start with the people that use nouns for verbs, like "i axe him a question" should be "i asked him a question". as long as i know what you are saying i'm fine with it. every time i hear people say axe, i hope they dont mean "chop you up"

Dell in India is some piece of work! I called them once and the CSR picks up the phone and says "Hello, this is Brian" (with an Indian accent!) After I commented on his name not being Brian, unless he had red hair and freckles, he switched me over to his supervisor..........wait for it.............Bridgette!!!! I guess it was "Irish Name Day" in Mumbai.... LOL

Hahaha...the whole story doesn't make sense. No one is THAT stupid...there's more to this story. If she did give him remote access, which is possible, when she saw her pics were taken off, she should have been questioning it. I would never call tech support and give them remote access and have them try to find missing pictures...never mind nude ones. I agree with a previous poster...time to drain the shallow end of the gene pool.

I have a Dell laptop for 4 1/2 years. I've had some minor issues but took care of them myself with the proper research. I've even ordered a new dvd +- rw drive from the (internet) and had no problems. My theory is "if you don't read the fine print when you order or purchase an item and something happens then you get what you deserve". For everything you have to agree or disagree with terms and conditions and just about everything you have to accept full liability if anything happens. The company is usually no longer liable unless you purchase a warranty. So be smart and buy a warranty and "read the fine print". It's there for a reason. I fell in that trap with other companies, but not with Dell. I've been real careful considering their track record for customer service is very poor. So the less I have to deal with tech support the better. But I wouldn't give Dell as a company a bad name. Just their customer service.

This is a good reason to pull our tech support back to the US where people can be held accountable for their actions instead of the filth hole india where they are probably patting each other on the back and passing the pics around. it was pics this time...maybee creit card info, mortage info or banking info next time.

And by the way Tara Fitzgerald got what she deserved. The article states "The tech, Riyaz Shaikh, was given remote access to the PC by Fitzgerald, who then claims she watched as Shaikh copied the images for his own use. A few days later, those images showed up online, on a site completely dedicated to showing off Tara's goodies. At this point, rather than go to the authorities or Dell (mistake number two), Fitzgerald turned back to Shaikh for help." Why did she call him back? She should have called the police. She was fully aware of what was going on but too stupid to realize it. I think this is a publicity stunt. But if she really wasn't paying attention then it goes back to my previous comment" you get what you deserve".
